isnt bad. A direct quote from a coworker who I have also heard say things like "I am just built big" and "I have big bones" and "you are lucky you are skinny". Now dont get me wrong, I ate one of her cookies when offered to me knowing full well that that is the number of cals that should make up my entire lunch. Stuff like this makes me so sad. These are educated people I work with and some of them just have no clue about nutrition. I would try to explain to them but then I would just be the "skinny" "exercise obsessed" person trying to tell them what is healthy since nobody here has any clue that I have ever been anything but what I am now. I dont really know what my point is...it just makes me so sad to see someone in their early 20s who has so obviously given up...I was once that person.

Muzic- i hear ya. Another thing we have in common. I never ate terribly bad, but in college i got fat off of large quantities of juice and soy milk smoothies. Basically i had a huge portion control issue. I got fat off of relatively healthy food go figure! ha. I have a bunch of friends who i try to slyly educate about portions and food choices. I try to talk to my patients about it to. I do it really slyly with starting with encouraging eliminating HFCS, then i work on other things with them. I went to Weight Watchers very successfully and encourage others to as well. When people jokingly ask me "can acupuncture work for weight loss?" I tell them that it is not a magic cure, but IN CONJUNCTION with weight watchers and exercise, it can work. Most don't listen, but a few have and a few have made some seriously HUGE changes in their lives.

What shocks me the most is how so few people know how to cook and how narrow their taste buds are. So many adults i come in to contact with are afraid of most healthy foods like vegetables, tofu, grains, beans, etc. Weird.

ETA: most people do not know i was ever heavy, i was 60 pounds heavier, and sometimes i need to tell people that, otherwise they think i am "the skinny runner who does not need to watch her food." Unfortunately i will always have to watch what i eat.

I guess this is the place to report that I ate two of those Grandmother soft cookies out of the vending machine.

But I didn't pretend to myself that they were low-calorie. The two-cookie package was 390 calories and 19 grams of fat.

I didn't plan well for lunch today. Actually it all started with a skimpy breakfast. Grr. I'm irritated with myself.

Yes, I agree that people need to be more educated about nutrition. When I eat Chipotle with coworkers they ask why I get a bowl instead of a burrito. My answer is that the tortilla alone is 400 Calories, and they are always shocked.

BTW... You only eat 280 Calories for lunch?

Well I generally eat a lean cuisine and a piece of fruit and veggies so its not much more than that. Somehow my ass is still gaining weight right now. I cant even go to weight watchers this week because I would have to pay.

Chipotle is evil. Whatever you do, don't look at their nutritional information. How they manage to turn a fairly healthful ethnic cuisine (when done well, aka non-americanized) into a caloric gang bang I will never understand.

I am currently nibbling on homemade carrot cake. Terribly terribly high in calories and terribly terribly good for the tastebuds.

Hmmm, at one time the tortilla was listed as 400, now it says 300.

When you choose wisely, Chipotle is quite healthy. Nix the guac, sour cream, and cheese and you have a very healthy 600-calorie lunch full of fiber, protein, and veggies. (I get a 3 out of 4 of the salsas!)

I always get the bowl too.

A few times the people making it have made snarky comments about how "light" it is. How most of the bowls just drop right into the paper bag with a THUD.. mine just sits there and they have to push it in because I don't always put quite as many toppings on it.

Really? Maybe it's because I'm in the middle of big-ass-burrito heaven here, but I always figured one gut-busting burrito made traditionally at the many Mexican joints around here is pretty much the same calorically as the Chipotle-fied version, because it's all about the portion size (and why i don't normally indulge in that stuff anymore.) I could be wrong though...

I get a lot of these kind of comments too. People who say I don't "need" to worry about my weight because I am very slim, yet can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that I AM this slim because I DO pay attention to what I put in my body, exercise etc. And part of it is I am just built small (but I've been much heavier, which is basically just fat on a tiny frame). People always seem to feel it's their place to comment on my weight, and it's infuriating.

I have to spread out my 1200 cals somehow. I dont want to use them all before dinner. I generally eat about 300 cals for lunch. If I eat more than ~1200 cals per day I gain weight.

Do you run? I find that when I weigh myself every day, I eat differently than when I weigh myself once a month. I am more careful about staying away from cookies etc., when I do not know my weight. And I weighed myself yesterday and had not gained anything since last month. (half pound difference; probably due to water or whatever. I am not worried about it.)

I am in the same boat as Muzicgirl. I exercise A LOT but need to keep my calories around 1400-1600 (except on long run days) or i will gain weight. There are also studies that people who weigh more often or daily maintain a healthy weight or lose more weight than those who do not. I weigh myself several times a week.
