Morning peeps! My alarm went off at 4:30 this morning, but I was having none of it. Will hit the treadmill soon, but will have to shorten my planned run. Hopefully I can pull a double so I can get my miles in. I was hoping to run a decent run (9-10 miles) with intervals yesterday. It was cold and icy here, so I went into work early. I left my office at 4 and the roads downtown were a complete disaster. In some parts it was still pure ice. So I ended up logging 6 sleazy, slow, slushy miles.

Treadmill today. Ooh - and I've got to get back into arm weights and core work. My lower back has been bugging me all week so I have neglected any serious core work. Hopefully I am on the upswing now.

Okay - off to the treadmill. I am going to go down there and think about Mexico for a while. :D

You would think, right? more freezing rain last night, so everything is glazed with ice today. And we're supposed to get 6-10'' again tomorrow, and more over the weekend. pffththt.

I made it less than 2.5 on the tm this morning. The boys woke up and immediately started fighting and I was feeling stressed about a brief I have due today. So, I'll have to plan for some serious tm time tonight. Gah.

RIL, sorry that you didn't get in the mileage you wanted.

Yeah, I miss some of our old friends too...

We're supposed to get some more weather tomorrow also. Should be fun.

I did a little speed thingy last night outside. Today I'll probably hit the TM for a few easy miles, just to keep the juices flowing...

An hour on the TM this morning. 3.6 miles with some incline and some speed, but wisely not at the same time. I'm sore. Tomorrow's rest day is quite welcome!

Has anyone ordered anything from this company?

Nicely done. I haven't ordered from (or even heard of) that company, but their website is nice. That has to count for something, right?

Run tonight for the first time since Monday morning. I ended up taking a rest day on Tuesday since my legs were so fried. I had a little mini victory this morning: I swam for the second time since November and was 36 seconds faster than I was for the same distance last Thursday. Yay me.

RANT:

Triathlons are freaking expensive. Like, ridiculously so. The race I want to do is $143 with all the processing fees and bs. I haven't signed up yet because I also have $200 for my allergy drops, $250 deductible to fix my father's car next week so we can sell it, all the household bills, etc. Plus I'm trying to be somewhat smart about spending because while I'm thrilled that so many of you guys are getting special meetings recently, someone else we know and love isn't and it's getting pretty scary. I just can't justify nearly $150 for a race right now, but if I don't act soon it will sell out so I have to pull the trigger VERY soon.

Yesterday I noticed on the race company's website that they offer registration reimbursement if you volunteer for them. 100% reimbursement if you give them 8 hours, 50% discount if you volunteer 4 hours. I emailed them immediately and asked for more info. Turns out all the free slots are gone (go figure) but they need 4-hour volunteers for an expo this weekend about an hour away, so I said, "Sign me up for 1:30 - 5:30 on Saturday!"

I got an email this morning that all the volunteer slots are already taken.

well, I tried to go out for 6 last night and got in a yucky 3. My lower back was super tight (not sure what from), my stomach was not happy with me and the dog was a huge putz. blah. I had a ton of errands to run for vacation and needed to get to those so I bailed after 1 lap of the lake.

Yesterday WAS a bad day, like everything was crap after I left the house. I hate those days. On a bright note, Wednesday's are my weigh-in days and after 5 weeks, I am 14.2 down!!! So excited! I can really feel it in my running.

Alexis - I have noticed Tris are super expensive, not to mention just the gear for them is spendy too. I would LOVE to do a few but I just cannot justify spending 1K minimum on a decent bike when my car's blue book value is about that.

Good morning peeps

Well I dont know if im in that group of those who used to post and are missed but I am making a big effort to get back here and post on a regular basis. About the time I stopped posting with any kind of regularity RIL was just joining the group. So I guess its been a while for me LOL. Something clicked in me after running Houston that said I needed to get back here to the 30s and start posting again.

As I said in the fun thread I give all of you who are stuck on the treadmill during the winter all the credit in the world. I hate those things and my body is reminding me why today. Gonna try to get outside for a run this evening or maybe some time on the bike. We shall see what goes on.

Hoping it starts getting better weather wise for you folks in the midwest and back east. Stay safe!

Welcome back to the fitness thread Frankie!

Uggg, Theia, hope the $$$$ situation gets straightened out soon. My vote is that you just sign up for the tri that you want to do and keep your fingers crossed that everything falls into place financially. Of course, DH thinks I'm financially irresponsible and would tell you not to listen to me!

[Devil's Advocate]Are tris really that expensive? If you look at it that they are putting on three separate races and therefore need three different sets of volunteers, logistics, etc and break that $143 into thirds you're paying just under $50 for each segment, and I think we've all paid in that ball park for a 10k. So to me, while not a bargain it's not that steep[/Devil's Advocate]

KP, I've been a race director for two different races (a 4-miler and a 5K) over the past 3 years, and believe me I know how much goes into a race. I do get it. But $143 for an Olympic tri is really high. Two years ago I am pretty sure it was $100 or maybe even right under $100 for the same distance and same race company. Ugh.

And thanks for the, um, good wishes! Something will work itself out soon. It has to.

Oh, and I forgot we're planning a trip for my Mom's birthday this summer (it's a noteworthy birthday) too. Gaaaaaaa! Where is this money coming from??? I won't hijack the fitness thread, but if you have any recommendations about cruises please let me know on Facebook or via email or PM. Thanks.

I've been threatening to train for a tri for years. But the cost has kept me away. Not specifically the entry fees, but the cost of a bike. Like Brandy says, $1000 right off the bat is a tough pill to swallow before I even know if I enjoy doing it. Right now my only bike is a mountain bike. It's fine for a little "cross-training". But I'm not gonna enter a race on it!

Another thing I hadn't thought of until recently: If you enter a tri somewhere away from home, you have to get your bike shipped there, right? I mean, it's not like it'll fit in the overhead bin of an airplane. How much does it cost to ship a bike??

Of course, running is getting expensive enough. Didn't some of you guys recently point out that the Chicago Marathon is like $140 this year? And New York is like $180?!? Sheesh! I know that those big cities need to pay overtime for a zillion cops and what-not. But that's still a lot of money to pay for a T-shirt and a few cups of Gatorade...

Well, technically I said "little speed thingy", but close enough. And, umm, I don't really have a training plan. Haven't really followed one in 2 years or more. That's probably not the best way to go about this, huh?

Yup, Bob, you are right. You can buy a bike case (expect to spend at least $350 or so for a good one) and then pay the extra cargo fees at the airport. Or you can pay someone to ship it for you (again, $300-$400) and hope that nothing goes wrong and your bike arrives when it's supposed to arrive. This is why I don't do any races I can't drive to.

Thanks Cindi!

In regards to a tri, you dont have a have a spendy bike right off the bat. A mountain bike will do for your first time. I garauntee every tri has someone on a mountain or beater bike to start with. Nobody is gonna give you grief about it. Sure it makes life alot easier to have a nicer bike. Im looking at doing a sprint tri on Thanksgiving day. I know I can bike and run, I just need to start swimming again. I havent swam a lap in three years.

i'm starting my shopping for a bike. i'm reluctant to fork over the $ but that's the way it goes. i have one of those 'beaters' in my garage (1989 Univega 8 or 10 speed) that must weigh 35 pounds. i'd say it's time to upgrade.

no workout for me today - i just got too busy.

studly indeed. looks like there could be a showdown in boston this april.

joe, no trip to No Cal for me next week...if you see this. maybe later in march so i'll be in touch.

brandy, nice work! how's baggs doin? say hey for me.

ril - that's my attitude too at 4;30 AM. i just don't bother with the alarm.

cheers
