You'll be back quicker than you think Johnny.

I finally got to the Mohican State Forest to run some trails. Its only 35 miles and 50 minutes away but I don't think they really had that much trail until the mountain bike path was done in the last few years. My cold went down in my chest a little so I wasn't sure how long I was going to go but I had an out plan of 4 trail miles and a couple on the roads if I was too tired. It turned a little cooler and was in the mid 40s so I ran in regular sweats with a hat and gloves. Didn't push the pace but kept it steady. I could really feel my cold on the uphills but when I got to the road at 4 miles, I felt good and kept going. After another 4.5 miles of technical single track, I turned onto a hiking path by the river that would take me to a covered bridge where I would take the road back to my car. The hiking trail was double wide, flat and easy and I got lulled to sleep thinking it would be this way the whole 2 miles to the other camping area where I would pick up the road. After about 3/4 mile though I almost lost the trail as it suddenly turned into very technical single track covered with rocks, fallen trees, and right next to the river where a wrong foot plant may end up being a 5 foot fall into the water. I was also starting to wear down by this point so I put safety over speed until I got out on the road. Once out on the road, I had a mile to the covered bridge. When I got over the covered bridge I had 3 choices to get back to my car. I could take a hiking trail that was 2.3 miles, the mountain bike trail that was 3 miles or the road which I estimated to be 2 miles. I decided on the road. I knew I was probably going to have a climb but I never imagined how much. I started up the hill and kept going and going and going. Every time I turned the corner of a switchback, there was more hill. It finally beat me and I stopped to walk after I had been running about an 1:40 minutes. I walked 2 or 3 minutes until I caught my breath and started going again. I ended up being not that far from the top and soon got back to the car. I had to drive that hill and see how long it was. 1.4 miles with 400-500 ft elevation gain and 9% incline in some areas. Total for the run was around 13 miles in 1:44 plus a little power hill walkiing.

I still only did 1/3rd of the 24.5 mile mountain bike trail so I have plenty more to go before I complete it all.

I'll have to wait until sunday to see if I do the 14 mile trail race. If I feel as good as I did today, I'll do it but not go all out.
