No taper twitchies yet, KS?

No run for me today..... regular 7 am spin class in the work gym will suffice for the day. After our 5K success, the fitness manager wants to start a run club here, with weekly lunchtime runs. We'll see how much enthusiasm we have once the cold weather sets in.

Will mini-taper myself for the rest of the week..... last of the series trail races is Saturday.

Enjoy your day everyone!

Heme - no taper twitches or madness this time around. Since the training cycle was so hot and with the breathing issues; I have no idea what to expect. It could be my greatest masters' race or worse. I'm just going to compete and take what the course gives. What is this cold weather you speak of?

Hi KS, Heme, and TW

Longer version coming shortly.

Hey you guys! Long time no see. Yeah, I know that's my fault and not yours. I don't think I've posted in almost a month, right? Not since before Equinox? Well, if I did, I forgot so I'll say it again. Had a pretty good race, although not what I was secretly hoping for. With all the training I'd been doing, and the other hilly (mountainous?) marathons I'd done, I figured I'd be on track to finally crack 4 hours on this one, or 4:05 at least. Race day was IRC but I just felt like a car stuck in 3rd gear with no overdrive. Still managed to get a course PR at 4:12:26 and managed to pass a couple of sub-30's something chickas in the last mile. Love it, especially when they'd passed me going up the hill in miles 10 & 11. Heh.

Been running since then, but less. Conference in Dallas end of September took a whack outta my mileage, but still ran a couple times there on the Katy Trail. DH and I had dinner with Ribs and the Saint (and the boys) on Tuesday before coming home the next day.

Ran a 10 mile tempo run on Saturday (7:37 pace) that I still don't know where that came from. Sunday's run was 14 to give me just over 47 for the week.

Oh, and we STILL have no snow but it's gotten quite a bit colder this week. Today's run was 5.5 miles @ 34° in gloves, tights and long sleeves. There. You're all caught up on me.

Oh, and I entered and got accepted into Boston 2012. Still not really sure why I did that.

Go get 'em in your race, KS! I think you'll do great. Did you ever get any answers to your breathing issues this summer? Or was it just environmental factors?

Hi Heme! Your trail runs always sound like so much fun.

Hey Happy Feat! I do that with some runs, too. Feels so good I just don't want to turn around. But then you have to get back, and sometimes regret your earlier enthusiasm. It is a good tactic with longer long runs though, where you really need to get the distance.

Hi Mike! Nice tempo run for you yesterday (got that day right, right?). What's your next race?

Happy day off, tomwhite.

Another race, Rip? You really are incredible.

Hi BobtheNerd, PTBrown and Roly! I missed where Roly first posted, new folks are always welcome in these parts!

6 miles at an easy pace at noon. I planned another run this evening but corporate financial mini-crisis kept me in meetings till after dark.

Hi Evanflein! It was good to hear Spareribs name again.

KS, you are going to dominate. Start cautiously, run to plan 2/3 of the race, then let loose.

So Rlemert, I googled your particular exercise-triggered hives and read this: Showering with hot water may cause a release of histamine throughout the body depleting histamine stores and causing a 24-hour refractory period. Why don't you try the hot shower before you go for a run and see if that prevents it?

No running for me tonight - scrapping the plan - yoga instead. For some reason, the combination of my last two runs being medium-long and at a slightly faster than usual EZ pace caused a golf ball to arise in my left arch this morning! I'm talking OUCH! I was able to rest it on one of those frozen-for-hours shipping ice blocks for much of the day and "the ball" has gone down, better, but the area is still sore. I've absolutely never had a problem in my left foot, so I'm quite dismayed. I'm sure it will be fine tomorrow, and I don't know why these things continue to surprise me, but they do. I've noticed in the last few years that running-related twinges or pains will come up that never happened before, tend to be short lived, and never happen again. What is that about?? Maybe it's just me.

Congratulations on your Boston acceptance, Erika - that's sweet.

I'm glad you stayed on track...I mean, trail Rip and that you enjoyed some great chow. Looking forward to your RR.

KS I concur with PT and Evan and TW you will do great.

seven at ten minutes today for me. Probably faster than I need to be doing for a recovery pace but I'm in a calorie-burn mode this week.

Hi Erika Great racing as usual. How many marathons is that this year?

My brother's birthday was yesterday so we went to The House of Blues in Chicago to see one of his favorite groups the Bangles. We made a whole weekend out of it by leaving saturday morning and returning today. The first thing we did was visit the original Al's Italian Beef for an authentic Italian Beef sandwich. That evening we got a deep dish pizza to eat while watching the Buckeyes fall apart in the second half and get beat by the Cornshuckers. That gave me enough energy to run a 5.5 mile trail race in a nice park area west of Chicago called Paw Paw Forest Preserve. The run was around Bullfrog Lake and consisted of one large loop and then a smaller loop closer to the lake. It was moderately hilly but the first loop had one long uphill at about 2 miles into the race. I warmed up by running the long loop getting in 3 miles. The race started and we immediately went up a 200 yard hill that we would have to run up again right before the finish. A 5k was started at the same time so I didn't have any idea who was running which race but I was about 15-20 after a half mile. Since I have been running all longer races, it was really hard to get up to speed. I kept pushing the pace and was waiting for the large hill where I would put in a surge. I kept passing people as we circled back to the start area of the race where we took a different path (12" high grass matted down) and then went up hill. At the top of the hill, the 5kers turned to finish and we started our second loop. I ran for a little bit before seeing a runner and soon passing him. I was getting rolling now and my garmin said I was doing about 6:20 pace. I didn't see another runner until about 4 miles and eventually caught him. At 5 miles we came out into the opening by the lake and I saw another runner (in my age group who ran well the year before) but knew I couldn't catch him. I finished 12 seconds behind in 4th place overall and 2nd AG in a time of 36:57. The runner ahead of me thought he finished 2nd as the second place runner may have been a 5ker who got put in our results so I may have been 3rd overall. After finishing the race, I asked if anyone wanted to run the course again but I didn't get any takers. I used the first couple miles to recover and picked up the pace getting pretty tired the last 2 miles. I ran the second 5.5 miles in a little over 40 minutes to get 14 miles in for the day.

After I got done with the race, my brother and I went to Navy Pier and spent the sunny Sunday riding around Chicago on the top of a double decker bus. Monday for lunch we finished off the last must eat food with an authentic Chicago dog.http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQLDdTmRKNQxpSfCb1NZ31DVy_RWuPilTuQR8o0HtsfBfYzlY2BqJS65Oo1cQ

All the food and fun must have wore me out as I bonked out on my eliptical workout this evening. Made it 47 minutes before I stopped. I got some water and tried again but I was done for the day. I did sweat out all the beer from the concert last night so I should be ready to go tomorrow.

Erika, here's a reason to run Boston. You never know which race will be your last. Last February I injured my knee. It got a lot better but I had persistent soreness. On Monday I finally got an MRI. Torn ACL and meniscus. Running not recommended. Surgery probably in my future. After that I'll still be dealing with a degenerative meniscus. Nuff said?

I probably won't be posting much in the near future, as I won't be running much. I wish you all continued success with your running. Enjoy it while you can.

FO - sorry for the diagnosis. I have a friend who has had surgery on both knees for the same reason as you. Doctor told him no more running. He doesn't like speed work much anymore but still runs marathons and ultras up to 100M. Don't get discouraged and give up just yet. He did shed his extra lbs which helped him.

Thanks for all the votes of confidence. I'll carry it with me next weekend.
