It's really only in two small areas, but itches like crazy (and is starting to ooze even though i'm not scratching!). I'm going to leave work to run to the pharmacy in 1/2 hour. What is the best itch relief??

Check with your Dr. I'm pretty sure they can prescribe a strong cream that will help

roids. (Actually, if it is bad enough, a doc will prescribe a two week course of steroids). Lincoln is correct with the benedryl recommendation. One other thing you can do is to make a cup of tea and save the bag. Once it cools, use the damp tea bag to blot the affected area. The tannins in the tea will help dry out the affected area and quicken healing.

I used to get this all the time, still do on occasion. I am very susceptible.

Hot water! I'm serious! Hold the affected area under the hottest water you can stand for a few minutes. It will take the itch out. Repeat as needed, usually every couple hours.

I had the worst PI on my arms. I was going nuts! Someone suggested the hot water thing and I thought they were nuts. But at 2am, I was willing to try anything. And the hot water did the trick!

HAIR DRYER!!!!

I've been racking my brain trying to remember what weird-ass thing I did last time I had it and you made me remember.

Use a hairdryer on its hottest setting and blow the area until you can't take it anymore, plus 5 seconds.

I don't know why, but it works to stop the itching.

I've tried the hot water tactic for the last 3 days. It worked for about 6 hours the first day, but only a couple today. Since I can't easily hoist my leg up to the sink at work, I tried another option.

I bought the Benadryl spray. There was only 1 bottle left at the store, so I'm glad I got there in time. I sprayed it on 6 hours ago, and am just now getting the urge to itch. Maybe it's because I'm thinking about it...

This is NOT doctor approved.. but I used a salt paste on a weird rash I get on my shins each winter ( Dr keeps saying it's poison ivy.. but it lasts for 6-8 weeks!) I made a paste of salt and water and plopped it on all over the rash and rubbed it on lightly. And just let it dry there for a half hour or so. Then I brushed off the salt and patted it clean with a dry washcloth. The itch was gone right away and the rash healed after 2 or 3 days of salting it down.
The steroid cream the doctor prescribed was over $40.. I tried the salt first - a thing of salt is less than a dollar!

I get poison ivy a LOT and when I get it it's BAD ...

I read that the heat (water, etc...) releases the histamines, or something like that ... and that you can only produce so many in a given time period so the heat releases them to keep the itchies away for a while ...

I didn't used to know that but since I was a kid I'd take the hottest shower I could stand and rub the heck out of the rash with soap and a washcloth .. and then pat it all down with rubbing alcohol when I got out of the shower ... stung like the dickens but it was better than the itch!

Really bad cases should be handled with help of the doctor ... steriods, like somebody else mentioned, are likely to be prescribed as well as some heavy duty ointments for itch relief ...
