Has anyone read this? I am reading it for a real life face-to-face book club. I'm about half way through, and I am hating every page of it. It's like sticking a fork in my eye over and over again.

I read a synopsis of the plot. It sounds like an interesting (but overwhelmingly sad) story. Is it the story that you don't like or is it the writing itself?

Did the author coin the term "Tortilla Curtain" or has this expression been around. Maybe I've been living under a rock & just haven't heard it. It's kind of a clever term to describe the divide between illegal hispanic residents & the rest of the U.S. population.

It's the story. I have a hard time staying interested in books like this. It reminds me a lot of the Grapes of Wrath.

The story is about an illegal immigrant couple trying to start a new life in the US and their interface with a white, privileged family, and basically the community at large. There are no redeeming qualities in the white privileged family, and each page shows worse and worse conditions for the illegal immigrant couple. I have a hard time reading a fictional story where there's no hope.

sorry. The other people in my book club really like it so far. It looks like I'm the only one who doesn't. I'm afraid to hurt the feelings of the person who picked the book this month at our book club meeting, so I'm expressing them here.

I was just kidding, it's just that I like my eyes...

However, I didn't mind the Grapes of Wrath, so maybe it wouldn't bother me so much.

I had to read it for a staff development. I didn't care for it.

Testing!

I have this on my mp3 player, was just going to start it.
It was from the library so if I hate it no biggie.

No matter how slow you run it is still faster than someone sitting on a couch

We just had our book club meeting about this. I ended up finishing the book the night before. It just wasn't a pleasurable read, however, I will say that it did provide some food for thought. After I would put it down, I was stilling thinking about the issues it addressed hours later. It's good book for discussion, just not something I would recommend for pleasure.
