RR: Mad River Tri

Mad River “Sproly” Tri .4/20/4.5
So, we get there and I am setting up in transition and hear the announcer say that the water temp is 54 degrees! Um, $hit I don’t have my wetsuit with me. You see, I feel like I am being choked when I wear it, so I only wear it for long distances or say in early June when the water will be cold. And um, it’s August 2nd and I am about to swim in a tiny little pond(that is apparently fed from the White Mountains, oof).

Swim:
Goal 20:00
Actual 17:47

So from the second my face hit the water, it took my breath away. My first thoughts were “I can’t do this”. Somehow I just kept going and within 5 minutes I was in a groove and feeling pretty good. I am sure I have the cold water to thank for pushing me to go faster!

T1: 3:03
So, it was a really long run from swim to bike and I hadcrap all over my feet and um, I suck at transitions.

Bike:
Goal 1:15
Actual 1:12:33 16.6 MPH

Did I mention that this race was being held in the White Mountains? First 12 miles or so, fantastic fast downhills. Problem is you have to turn around and go back. L Was only passed 3X. Passed 4 guys, including 1 that had previously passed me…take that! I said to him as I was going by “you’ll just pass me again” but we were on the hard climb and he said, no you got me! I have to admit thatput a smile on my face!

T2: 2:17
Ok, so I had to pee and it was a long run from bike to rack, to shoes, to pee.

Run:
Goal 44:59
Actual 44:02 9:47 Pace

The run sucked for the first 2 miles. I hate running in the summer and I knew this run was going to suck as I hammered the bike and my quads were sore before it even started. Run devil was really enjoying himself telling me to walk, walk, walk. I took a few quick walks to drink and my competitive will stepped in to make sure I hit my run goal. I was having such a good race, I didn’t want to miss this last goal!!

Total time 2:19:30

I came in 4th in my AG!!!!! Here is the worst part: The woman that beat me did so by just under 2minutes AND her transition times were just under 2 minutes faster than me. ****!!! I am going to work on that next year!!

I am thrilled with my race. There is nothing like training for something and beating all your goals!!! Thanks for reading!

Great job, way to beat your goals.

Have you ever went and watched a tri? I highly recommend camping out at the transition area and watching the top folks come and go. I learned so much doing that.

You are super impressive!!! I bet the weight loss and all kinds of strength workouts are really helping you! Wat to go, congrats on 4th! In addition to the transitions, maybe you can figure out the fluid intake so you don't have to go to bathroom. (Or dear I say learn how to pee in the bike..)
You are rockin' this season!

Great job out there Julie! 4th in AG is awesome. Great bike split given the amount of uphill on the way back - you must have been flying. Usually that pond is much warmer than 54 in August. Last time I did Black Fly it was barely wetsuit legal.

Seconding Yoshi - you have been rocking it this tri-season. Very impressive to beat all three goals! (well ... I'm assuming you didn't beat your transition goals if you had one ... good suggestion by jkaiser). Also with KSurp ... an impressive bike split for some serious hills....

Way to go.

Great job Julie!! Congrats on smashing through all of your goals, especially the cold swim without a wetsuit! I need to get my transition video done to see if I can help you out and I promise I will. You'll just fly through next time!!

Great job Julie! I like Kaiser's idea of watching transitions. There is a lot to be learned and it's all free speed.
So what's the deal with the wetsuit? Does it fit you right or do you just not like using it? You're super bad ass for swimming in 54 degree water without one!!!! And I still think Alcatraz should now be on your list.

Thanks everyone! It was a great day and yes, I am going to practice transitions next year and add some more bricks to training. I think that is another area that can help.
