Big Lake Half Marathon Race Report
This was my first ever half marathon in May 2006, it was a cold rainy day and a little déjà vu hit me as I was driving up Saturday in the rain again!
Breakfast: Turkey sandwich, banana, gu at mile 7 on the course
Fashion Report: Capri tights, blue short sleeve shirt, baseball hat
Results:
1:57:19 (Previous PR 1:59:01)
386/822 Overall (Top 46%!)
28/100 AG (Not bad for the last person picked in gym class!)
148/456

I was very keyed up for this race. Training has been perfect, no injuries and CS was convinced I was going to have a great race. In fact, he thought I could do 1:55. I went out Monday at 8:45 pace to see how I felt and it was really hard. I told him he was crazy, I can’t imagine holding that pace for 13.1 miles. Ronbo reminded me that I was tired from vacation and proper rest would probably make me feel different, Mike reminded me that my coach knows what I’ve been doing and I should listen and Thor suggested I just “let the day come to me”. I listened to everyone and had a good taper week.

Driving up in the pouring rain, I was pretty calm. I was meeting my friend Cari there, she has been trying to PR for 3 years so we were both in the same mind set. Luckily the rain turned to just sprinkles at the start so we weren’t freezing while we waited.

The start came and I kept telling myself to calm down and don’t get caught up. The adrenaline is always so strong and it is easy to go out too fast. I was watching my pace and amazed at how easy it felt, but I still kept it conservative, miles 8-10 are the most hilly and I didn’t want to blow it. Well, the miles clicked away and I was feeling great, just kept on task. Mile 10-11 is always the hardest for me in a half, I don’t know what it is. During that stretch the little run devil came out and said you’ve got a PR in the bag, so just slow down and enjoy. But, I wanted more than just to get a technical PR, I wanted to do the absolute best I could, so I made a deal with myself to see how it felt when I hit mile 11. Once I hit mile 11, I just said hey, you can deal with pain for 18 more minutes, and I did, I turned it up as best as I could and I hit a great PR, 1:40!!!

I have to tell you sometimes I can’t believe how much faster I have gotten. Last April I died hitting 2:03:25. Last October I absolutely DIED hitting 1:59:01 and in comparison, this race was easy. Of course you can second guess yourself and on the way home in between giggles of glory I kept thinking, if I had just gone a little bit faster at the beginning, I could have gotten 1:55! Ha, next fall here we come. And my friend Cari got herself a nice PR too by over a minute!

Congrats Julie - Wow! A pain-free report and a PR - good to hear that the elements and hills did not slow you down in the least. Bonus - your medal matches your margarita glass quite nicely! Run the seacoast half on a good day with a good training base, and that 1:55 is definitely in the bag.

Fantastic job Julie!!! Good to see that your hard work in training is paying dividends. And nice job in not letting your own mind and a little rain slow you down before the race even started. Keep it up and you'll have 1:55 in no time!

Amazing race, Julie. You have come so far, and the beauty is that you've earned everything along the way. 1:55? It's pretty obvious that this is yours. In fact, I hope you not focus on 1:55 but rather racing to your ability, and I know the time on the clock, once you take your game up a notch, will be something very different -- in a much faster way, and we're not talking 1:5x! Well done, girl! And nice picture!

Thanks everyone! I am still wearing a silly grin on my face 2 days later

JR: Yes, I have lost 14 pounds since January. I consider that part of my training

Master: You bet I enjoyed that drink!!! I worked hard for it and it tasted so good replacing those electrolytes!

Weight Watchers. I have also lost 9+ inches, that by weight training & pilates (I know you will approve of that!)
