We have these swim/run "races" each Tuesday at one of the reservoirs that are great training practice for OW swim. The race I entered is 750 yd swim/5k run. Not much to you guys doing Olys, HIM and full IM etc but still a decent challenge for me prepping for my sprint tris.

As much as I love to swim and like to think of myself as a halfway decent swimmer, I really struggle in OW. I so wanted to do well last night because last week my swim truly sucked. I got in the lake and when the men started (2 min before women) I made myself relax and adjust and get my breathing under control so I could start stronger. That, and make sure there weren't going to be any goggle leakage issues.

Last YEAR (my first) I did this race in 52:34 ... 17:44 swim, 2:32 T1, 32:19 run. I had nothing to compare it to and it was just before my first tri. I had fun and got a little bit of feel for what my first tri race day would be like.

Last WEEK, my time was 50:25 (2/2 in my AG.. first was 50:22!) with a 17:32 swim (pathetic), 1:04 T1, 31:49 run. Not all that happy with the race but really upset with my swim. I decided I could and would break 50 minutes this week.

Last NIGHT, my time was 48:21 (1/6 in my AG!! and 33/73 women) Lots more women last night, I think since Tri for the Cure is in a week. My swim was 15:14, T1 1:05, and 32:03 for the run. There was killer wind out there but I managed to plug away at the run... thinking about you guys who do those long course races for inspiration!

I'm pretty pleased with my "progress" and looking forward to my race on Aug 3. I am always smack in the middle of the field (of almost any race I do) and I'm ok with that. Not bad for a 50 year old who just found this crazy, fun sport last year. I'm having a blast and that's the main reason I'm doing it!

Thanks for reading!

Oooo....
A dip-n-dash sounds GREAT!

You have made great progress, too.

I struggle with Swim to bike transition because running out of the water is hard for me. I think having a dip-n-dash would be a great way to get some of those jitters under control.

Ferries are for wimps!!
Let's swim!

And you SHOULD be pleased with your progress. To gain that much on the swim and not suffer at all on the run, and with out the wind you know you'd be even quicker, that's pretty darn good. And I bet that if you should up week in, week out, you'll only get better, because now it is bringing out in a fine-tuning way your race fitness, which is key for when the big-girl races come along.

Great work, great progress.
