It sucked.....I was ready to go this morning ....... I figured it would have been one of those races of survival... plus I could have caved at mile 8 and only run the HM.

Hat's off to the director .... got a head's up email last night at 8:00 that the race may be canceled and then got their promised email at 3:59 this morning saying that it was canceled. I guess there were a number of runners that didn't find out until they arrived at the start this morning.... I heard that a number of runners were seen running around Pasadena in their marathon shirts with a few wearing their race bibs.

it got up over 90 here today (and I live less then 5 miles from the beach)

The race is owned by a Pasadena group, but they contract with ICR (LB marathon owners) for their RD services. I'm not sure who made the final call.

I hope they take this opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons. They need to find a way to hold some sort of marathon over then next few weeks (even if the original course isn't available) and raise funds for fire victims or something.

Hopefully they'll make some quick decisions so everyone can adjust their training schedules.

It was hot yesterday ..... I was going to salvage a run down at Newport Beach but got a late start so DW and I just rode bikes down there. I did return this morning for a run to get away from the smoke and ash. I really enjoyed running the 10 mile loop at the Back Bay.

the worst air in the entire LA basin is hovering over my house -

I got a decent run in early Saturday AM - about an hour or so later, we started to smell smoke - it was a giant wind tunnel funneling the smoke down toward Long Beach

Hey Ilene, way to go!

SLOJim, I was glad they cancelled -- Lew and I were worried about you with the heat and the stinky air.

arc, it was nasty over the South Bay this weekend (the sky was very dark, like nearly nightfall) and I thought it was due to the PV fire (10 acres burned), but it was just the winds bringing all the soot and stuff to the beach.

Hello everyone. I just wanted to add myself to the SoCal runner thread. I already replied to the Surf City marathon thread and started the OC marathon thread.... I read through the discussion of the fires and smoke and such. I was fortunate in that I live on the other side of the Angeles Mountains and the wind was blowing your way. Smoke was never an issue up here in the high desert. smile.gif

Tell me about it. Last Sunday I got up early - 6:00 and ran. It was 27 degrees. Today was not so bad however. I just finished a 20 miler and it is 54!

Hey, our run was about 54 too. smile.gif Cool. I hope that Surf City is the same, it was perfect; cold, dry, no wind and slightly overcast.

Me too! Although I hear it rained last year.... Or was that the year before?!?

Actually, rain in itself would not be too bad, as long as it is not stormy (windy.) I guess they don't have any 27 day forecasts do they roll_eyes.gif

hi Dale, good luck at Surf City! As for OC, maybe I'll do it next year because the Palos Verdes Marathon/Half Marathon is the day before OC.

Good luck Rainey! The weather should be warm!

I am planning to do the Buffalo Run in February. Let me know how hilly I can expect it to be. smile.gif

Anyone thinking about doing Pasadina next year? I might do the half with a friend who lives in the area.

So Cal runners

Does Surf City (2/7/10) have any kind of "Preferred Start" system?

My guess with the size of the marathon it does not?

They line us up in honor system corrals. You would definitely be on the elite front line, Flounder! Are you going to run it?? That would be awesome! smile.gif

Yup,

Already registered and have my plane ticket - My sister lives in San Diego, we are running it together (But not by each other)

I restarted my training Aug 2nd and I should be in decent shape by February.

Are you running it?

Good deal Flounder, I'm doing the race as well, so I hope to see you again.

The marathon only has ~ 2,000 runners, so it is really easy to line up wherever you see fit. The half has 12K runners, but it starts 30 minutes after the full.

Does the 1/2 and full finish along the same course? That is always a struggle to dodge all the slower 1/2 marathon people when you are hurting bad the last 2-3 miles.

They come together only the last 50 feet. The half marathon runner/walkers stay in the street and the full are along the bike path until the very end, so hurting bad or not, you get to just barrel through them to the finish chute! biggrin.gif
