I am training for a marathon in early October, and had built in a couple of extra weeks just in case.

I did my first of two 20 milers this past weekend. My question is whether it's better to save the 2nd 20 miler three until weeks before the marathon, or whether doing it 4 weeks before really won't make much of a difference at this point. Thanks.

I'd say it's best to do it three weeks before, and then start the taper. That will allow you to get in another regular (non-tapering) 13-14 miler the week before. Four weeks to taper is too long in my opinion, especially if you've only done one 20-miler. Of course, if life/work/family might get in the way of getting the 20-miler done 3 weeks before, then get it in however you have to.

Where's your marathon? Your first one? Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks. I'm doing Baltimore for the first time: it's my 33rd overall.

RCL - I'm running Baltimore too!!!!!

I don't think it makes too much of a difference. As long as you get your long ones in, doing it one week earlier is not a big deal...to me anyway.

Baltimore will be my 12th overall. Maybe I'll see you there.
