Thanks Alex. What a difference 30 years can make. I remember briefly skimming through this back when I was in college, and thinking that it was a bunch of hippie drivel. But back then, I was a sprinter and thought anything over 400 meters was too far. I read this now, and I actually 'get' it (or at least most of it...).

This line truly resonated with me:

you may want to run
with a friend or a loved one
but running is not ecstatic
unless it is graced
by your own natural pace

There's a groove to be had regardless of the tunes. The "eye of the storm" sort of thing. That's why early Incubus does it for me.
