Randomly chosen from the suggestions.  The next topic is waste.  I would think it would be very different from the last assignment, but that is up to you to decide.

Don't blame me - blame the random # generator in Excel :D

I am choosing assignments by listing suggestions in a spreadsheet, and the next column is a randomly generated # between 0 and 1.  Highest # is the assignment

This isn't really my submission for this assignment, because it isn't a good photo.  I wish I'd had my regular camera this day.  I was volunteering with a group to clean up along the river and someone found this old car battery with plants growing in it.  Still, if waste = trash, then with a proper photographic treatment of the subject, this could have been really a really nice image.

Wasn't sure what you meant by "not really good photo".  I found the composition captivating.  Then I saw your shadow - but still, an interesting shot.

I thought that it looked a bit washed out on the whiter parts of the battery, the shadow was distracting, and it was not as sharp a focus as I would have liked.  Thanks for the more positive reviews than I gave it myself.

Hmmmm.

Waste = hard.

I don't just want to go with some stupid landfill.

And the worst part....it was my suggestion.

This was not easy, but I think I have a few that will fall under the category. These were taken with my son's Kodak EasyShare C360 and have had - at most - some mild cropping and some shadows accentuated.

These first two shots are of an old coal-burning stove that came with the garage when we bought our house. It's sitting outside now and slowly rusting away.

These next two are from a dumpster behind our local grocery store. The first one is an interesting contrast of straight and curved lines. The other one shows how much good strawberry is left even after the store has to throw it away. I think the one blueberry in the picture makes an interesting statement, as does the fly sitting on the big berry.

034.JPG

This is from a recycle drum behind a local Mexican restaraunt (sp?).

042.JPG

This one's the waste bucket under the tint canisters in the paint department of our local hardware store. The vivid colors speak for themselves.

048.JPG

Finally, the waste oil pit at our local Jiffy Lube. It's kind of hard to tell that there's used motor oil there, but I like how well it catches the reflection of the building (something I didn't realize when I took the picture).

My DS decided to tag along when I took my pictures for this assignment (see previous post) and took some of his own. Here's the shots he likes.

This one is fairly stark in its simplicity, and pretty much speaks for itself.

036.JPG

Banana peel in a neighbor's yard. It almost looks spider-like, with the different peels going in different directions.

lowreswasteBanana.jpg

This one is looking down the length of a construction-waste bin. There's a restaraunt to the right that's being remodeled, and this is the trash coming from that remodeling.

060.JPG

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste." I was scouting the dumpster to see if I thought it had any possibilities, and I didn't realize DS was taking this shot.

DS would appreciate any comments you have about his photographic skills.

rlemert- nice photos!  Of yours, I like the paint bucket the best.  The vivid colors really are nice, but also like the contast of the grey at the top of the photo.  Of your sons, I like the sewer cover.  This is a case where I think having the photo centered is an asset rather than a detriment because to me it looks like a bullseye.

I too, like Bard, like the sewer cover shot, and the paint bucket shot...

Who woulda thunk it...waste is hard to shoot without being to "obvious".

I still haven't gotten a shot yet on the topic.

Which makes it all the more challenging and interesting.

Okay so, hors concours so that everyone knows it isn't "in" this assignment.  A comment on patriotism, trails and (natural) waste.

I LOVE that paint bucket shot.  I have some ideas, but have yet to try and execute them.  I need to stop working for a living...

rlemert - I love the paint bucket shot; the coal burning stove pics are pretty cool too

bard - funny how nature always seems to find a way; I like it

Waste...might not have time this weekend to get this one done, but I'll try my best

Well, that topic was tough.  There was some good stuff from others, but I didn't post anything...part because I didn't see anything, and part because I didn't get the time.

Let's hope the next one is a little easier.

What's the random number generator say this time?
