  • Why do you run?
I enlisted in the Navy 6 yrs ago (age 37), part of the requirement was to be able to run 1.5 mi in a certain time. I don’t remember the time, but it was generous. I was in pretty good shape but didn’t do any running (I cycled, lifted…) so I started running to improve my score on the Navy PRT run (our twice a year fitness test). I found the CH, got hooked, got led to Kick and got more hooked, and here we are!

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
I would have to say my Naval career. I have advanced and performed at an astonishing rate. Most at my level have been in for 12-15 yrs. I am very proud of that.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
Well, don’t know if it’s a motto so much as a philosophy: The strongest power we have is the choice of how we let things affect us. Sometimes I am pretty good at practicing it, other times I fail miserably.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I say, I listen to my body; if it is really not up to it, then so be it – try again later.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
No, nothing more than personal satisfaction.

6. Who do you admire most?
My late Grandmother. She essentially raised me, and was the wisest, kindest person I’ve ever known.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
From my engineering dept manager many years ago; “Darren, I’ve never heard of anyone lying on their death bed and saying ‘I wish I could have spent just a little more time at work’, go home.”

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
That the Navy Seabees was the place for me!

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Communicate telepathically with family and special friends. Written and verbal language is just to blunt a tool for true sharing of thoughts and feelings. To be able to “mind meld” with them, and truly share my would be beautiful.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Easygoing, quiet, thoughtful, funny.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Shorts and tank top off duty, blue shorts and brown T-Shirt on duty.

12. What has been your favorite race?
It’s crazy I know – I haven’t run any. Go ahead, call me a middle aged recreational jogger

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
If I can ever improve my swim to a less than lethal exercise, I’d love to try a Tri.
14. What makes you happy?
Knowing that I’ve done something that made a positive difference to someone else.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
Sorry, that’s classified.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
Again, classified.

Great POTD, Seabee. Did you join the Navy after 9/11? What motivated you to enlist?

I love your answer to #9. It is so original and a fascinating idea.

Have faith in you and the things you do.

Thanks guys!

Chele,
Wait.... it's working!!! Something's coming through. It's.... it's....ROCK THE CASBAH!

SGH,
I started the process in late Aug 2001, finalized and sworn in on 27 Sep. Original motivation came from a reserve CWO4 that I worked with. We talked a lot and I told him how I wished that when I was younger and even more foolish I had joined. I thought that ship had already sailed. (pun most definitely intended)
He told me about this program where professionals without prior service could enlist in the reserves. I talked with the recruiters and was hooked. Then in the midst of the process 11 Sep... That just solidified the whole thing.

Great post Seabee. I never knew you had never run a race. I don't race much myself, as I run pretty much for weight management and stress relief. If you ever do a race, I think you will enjoy it. It is exciting being around the other runners even though I'll never win a race since I am a back of the packer, the competition is still fun.

Anyway, have a Merry Christmas, about as merry as it can be over there. Thanks for your service and fortunately since you are over the hump, you are on the road home sooner rather than later.

Be safe.

Thank you Seabee....I always look forward to reading anything you post. It was great to get a glimpse into who you are. I've seen you mention Taoist philosophy on many occasions and I too believe there is a lot of wisdom in it.
Stay safe over there and have a Merry Christmas!!

Great bonus POTD!! It was wonderful to read more about you. I really liked your answers to #7 and #9. I've heard the deathbed quote before and I think it is so true. Thank you SO much for your service for our country. Especially at times like this when you are away from your family. I <heart> the military.

I've got DEIDS access, I can find you.

Although I doubt I'll be heading to the sandbox for a 'PRT' meet up but if you ever find yourself in SoCal, beers are on me.

Nice to "meet" you Seabee.. Ironically I was thinking about you this morning - sending out some safe prayers for ya!
Where do you get to run while you are over there? I mean do you end up having to do laps around a compound or ?? If that is not sharable that's fine. I'm just curious.
We have a fellow from town who served in Afghanistan a few years ago and was a top marathon runner in the area- so he trained and staged his own race there. They ran it in laps and had to carry weapons to do it, but it was quite a thing.
Best to you this holiday season.
