Yesterday in the Finish Line area I joined a discussion on goals for the coming year and got a lot of comments on it. Anyway, here what I said. Enjoy...
It's funny...back in my college track days, in September our coach used to hand out individualized "goal cards" for the year. These were index cards with times at various distances written on them, that he wanted us to strive for over the course of the year, knowing that these times were very difficult, if not impossible to actually reach. For example, as a 4:38 miler coming into college as a freshman he gave me a goal card with 4:20 on it. I never made it there, not as a freshman, soph or junior (I retired before my senior season).
Now, 25 years later, I get to do my own goal cards. I guess I'll post one on my KR blog next week. But here's a preview.
Mile - 5:20 - improved from 5:32 to 5:29 in 2008
3000m - 11:00 - improved from 11:32 to 11:13 in 2008
5k - 18:48 (current master's PR, ran it once in '07, haven't come close since)
5M - sub-30 (sub-31 much more realistic, but sub-30 just sounds nice).
10k - sub-40
10M - 65:00
HM - sub-90
Marathon - 3:10 (going for it at Boston)
