I wanted you. And I was looking for you. But I couldn't find you. I wanted you. And I was looking for you all day. But I couldn't find you. I couldn't find you. You're walking. And you don't always realize it, but you're always falling. With each step you fall forward slightly. And then catch yourself from falling. Over and over, you're falling. And then catching yourself from falling. And this is how you can be walking and falling at the same time. – Laurie Anderson “Walking and Falling”

I thought about this piece of performance art on my run this morning. There are times when I’m running that if I look down I get this dizzying sense that the world is moving beneath my feet and that I am on some immense tread mill, struggling to keep pace.

Then again, for a brief moment when running both feet are off the ground. It’s at that moment that we fly. Leaping and falling, feet barely kissing the earth and then taking flight again.

It’s all a matter of perspective, walking and falling, or running and falling, or flying and falling.

Have you ever run with your eyes closed? Find a quiet stretch of road, preferably flat, get a buddy you can trust and then close your eyes. Resist the urge to open them, focus instead on your breathing, on the sounds that your body makes while it runs, on the sounds that surround you as you run.

Who exactly is running? What exactly is moving? We’re always falling…

Running is distinguished, biomechanically, from walking by the flight phase. By the time when we overcome gravity and fly.

Wonderful words.

I like the idea of running with your eyes closed, especially if you wrapped yourself up with wads of toilet paper, for protection.

I suppose I'm missing the point. But it makes me giggle.
