Hello all,

This idea is not exactly the same as a VRAA, but I'm borrowing the virtual competition used by our local Tri-club during the holidays.

I suggest we could pick teams and and try a "Virtual" competition of some sort here:

Points are awarded as follows ?

- 1 pt. for every 100 yards swum (in or outside)

- 1 pt. for every road mile ridden on the bike
of your choosing

- 1 pt. for every 3 minutes logged on your
bike trainer or in Spinning class

- 4 pts. for every mile walked or run (1 pt for each 1/4

We could add more categories such as one for weighlifting or one for group classes such as yoga/pilates/aerobics.

I wouldn't be against moderating for the first round. We could make the team competition either a fixed time-period (say, one month), or a fixed point total (say, 5,000 or 10,000 pts.)

Basic idea is to have fun and to encourage getting out there for some sort of activity and to participate on a team.

What do you think?

I do a lot of elliptical and stepper, so maybe "generic cardio" that is non-running can get lopped into one category? I am totally in. smile.gif

roots 03-07-2007 01:46 PM

i would place eliptical and stepper in the same category as Spinning: 1 point for every 3min.

Cool. Meri's in.

I vote for Roots as race Director, and any rules he sets up are okay with me. icon_flower.gif

I'd play, and definitely am in favor of yoga & pilates being worth some points.

helllooo Mr Ranger Sir!

techgoddess 03-07-2007 05:28 PM

Great idea! Count me in!!

Anything that will help me get my lazy butt out the door and onto the road.

If Bugdude joins, make sure we're on separate teams! wink.gif

if you give double miles for races to make up for tapering I'm on meri's ream

Grizzly 03-07-2007 06:18 PM

I'm in.

Jhi 03-07-2007 07:42 PM

I'm so in. Especially if I'm actually going to do someone's half-IM later this year. And meri and I can challenge each other in powerhiking! icon_bounce.gif

Wow. Looks like there's interest.

Stay tuned for details.

equinox marathon 43 03-07-2007 10:11 PM

I'd be willing to play.

Hopefully my mileage will be back up near normal soon.

Floridaboiler 03-07-2007 10:14 PM

After March 24 my mileage is going to drop even more than it is now but I might be interested.

roots 03-08-2007 11:55 AM

Understanding that the next round of the VRAA is a trial-basis to see if there is genuine interest, I'm setting a finite time period:

Mar 16 - Apr 8 (24 days)

I am still brainstorming ideas on how to make the connection to a "Race Across America." Using a point system as I'm proposing does not exactly equate to "road miles." I anticipate the question, "If there's a set timeframe, where's the race?"

That said, perhaps our "points" can equate to miles or kms.

Please bear with and keep in mind that its a work-in-progress and the first round is a trial to workout the kinks. One of my underlying goals is to be inclusive to as many folks possible.

I'm in!

fatmantrying 03-08-2007 02:36 PM

Since I'm going to be headed back into the gym in a couople of weeks for some hopefully consistent cross training, how bout a point or two for every 30 minutes going through the machine rotation?

Jhi 03-08-2007 02:49 PM

Love your Aya, fatmantrying! My sis has a beautiful tattoo of it in the middle of her back.

and you inspired me to change my avatar to my wrist ink..nkyinkyim.

hahaoya 03-09-2007 01:56 AM

I think I could do this. When will it begin/end?

roots 03-09-2007 08:38 AM

Yes, check the scoring table next week. I think we can accomodate.

roots 03-09-2007 08:38 AM

Haha- did you see the sign-up thread? The next round is 24 days from Mar 16 - Apr 8.

Hope to see you there.

diablita 03-09-2007 09:06 PM

three more activities I'm hoping to get points for:
roller blading
ice skating
knee/wake boarding (if you're going to incude this one, it would probably be best to assign points by time -- and it's not easy)

drgenie 03-13-2007 09:42 AM

This is all good stuff, roots......we've done a bunch of different themed VRAA's over the years and each one has had some unique twists to it. That's what made them fun!

I think you are doing a great job here!

Did we figure something out for weightlifting, and are we counting DVDs you can do at home (Tae-Bo, The Firm, etc?) the same way as group classes? I think when we did it at RR it was in 30 minute increments since most DVDs are at least 30 minutes.

As far as the Race Across America, I know we've done that one before but I think that one was just a mileage activities race. We could convert points to miles though, I think that would work. Our teams that year were to represent the four time zones (although the members didn't have to necessarily live in that time zone to be on a team).

fox-runr 03-16-2007 03:10 PM

How about "bonus" days.

i.e. if you try something new on such-and-such a day: double score

or if you you go longer than you ever have, race day bonus, etc... icon_flower.gif

And if you run on your b-day quadruple points icon_cheers.gif

merigayle 03-16-2007 03:13 PM

Then, you better hope you are on my team on March 31st smile.gif
