what would you expect to find on your plate?

Depends.

If I'm in an Authentic Greek restaurant, or in Greektown, I'd expect Green Peppers, Tomatoes and Cucumbers with an Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar dressing.

If I'm in another kind of place that offers the Greek Salad alongside the Cesar, Caprese, and Garden, (Or in a Grocery store looking at premade salads) I'd expect Romaine Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Feta Cheese and Cucumbers with a zesty dressing that has spices and cheese in it that's perfect after a long run.

Sure, maybe tomatoes or cucumbers. But I don't expect much from restaurant salads, really. I make much better salads myself at home!

Thank you tamblyn and Peanut. That's what I picture too. I am very firmly in the no lettuce camp.

Today I got lettuce, one huge 1/4 of a tomato piece on top, white onion, 1/2 of a cucumber slice and what I can only describe as Italian dressing smothered all over it. Basically it was a regular house salad.

I think it's a prairie thing, because that is the 4th time I've experienced lettuce. But at least the other 3 times it slightly resembled what I think is a Greek salad. One time they had a greek salad with lettuce and a Mediterranean salad that was exactly what I wanted.

I was just wondering if this lettuce thing was regional.

Hm. Interesting. I think we always get the salad with lettuce here (generally iceberg, too, sadly. Which I hardly consider to be lettuce.. but that's another topic!)

Had a disappointing one yesterday for lunch. Lots of iceberg lettuce, not enough toms. a few tiny pieces of cuke & some purple cabbage. feta. dressing. that was it. served with a pita - i was looking fwd to a nice soft warm one and it was not

Wow! That one looks great, WRFC. I've bookmarked that one to make... I went to Buca di Beppo and got their "mixed greens salad". Um, it was one kind of green. Had a piece of tomato and not much more (I can't even remember it was so sparse). I was with friends of friends so I didn't say anything, but it was pitiful. Most restaurants have NO idea how to make a real salad. It's a filler to get money (this was $3 for a bread plate size amount of lettuce basically...rip off) and to say they have vegetarian options.

Maybe yesterday was International Mess Up a Greek Salad Day?

I was thinking that maybe I just got tossed salad, but my friend ordered tossed, that looked almost as pathetic, but at least her tomatoes were cut up, not just one huge chunk.

The traditional Greek salad, or horiatiki salata, is made without lettuce. As many have mentioned, the typical ingredients are tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, red onions, feta, kalamata olives, and a dressing of salt, pepper, oregano, olive oil, vinegar, and a little lemon juice.

OK, now I'm drooling.

There are lots of other Greek salads, however. But I'm sure when people think of Greek salad they are picturing this one.

Love,
The Greek
