A parent's complaint over a 'sexually graphic' definition has seen dictionaries removed from southern Californian schools
ASSOCIATED PRESS: A Southern California school district has pulled dictionaries from classrooms because a parent complained when a child came across the term "oral sex."
District officials said Friday that the Menifee Union School District—which serves 9,000 kindergartners through eight graders in Riverside County—is forming a committee to consider a permanent classroom ban of the Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
A memo from Assistant Superintendent Karen Valdes acknowledged it is a respected resource but district officials found that "a number of referenced words are age-inappropriate."
School officials will review the dictionary to decide if it should be permanently banned because of the "sexually graphic" entry, district spokeswoman Betti Cadmus told The Press-Enterprise. "It's just not age appropriate.''
I'm hoping that when Ev is old enough to look up oral sex and has questions about it, that he'll come to me and his Dad...and giggle and go through the rite of passage that WE did back in the day.
I think it's crazy to assume you can protect your kids from everything. The best I can do and hope for as a parent is that, because of a strong relationship, my kid relies on ME for info.
You don't just stumble across a word in the dictionary. It's got a brazillion pages in it. If they're looking it up, it's because they've heard the term and if they've heard the term then the ship has sailed on protecting their innocent little brains from the evil s.e.x.
That being said, I think it's crazy to to ban the dictionary.
I suppose the Bible should be next, for there's all kinds of sex going on within its pages.
I really do.
Every little thing people complain about now. It's ridiculous.
Tell your little precious "snowflakes" that looking up stuff like that is bad. Don't single out the **** dictionary or the school associated with it because it has words and phrases in it. What would you have them do...look for every single word/phrase that's objectionable, and if one is in there, you ban that dictionary? Guess what? You won't find ANY dictionaries for your school.
****...we are are going to ****, and we're already in the handbasket. We've been there for quite a while.
