Since I'm marrying a Twins diehard (and the Indians long since out of contention) I am mildly interested the the last remaining playoff race.

And that last night's rainout provides a twin-bill double header starting at 11:00 a.m. today, make the four game series even more interesting.

Records (with 7 games to play):
Detroit 83-72 (magic number 6)
Minnesota 81-74

How many games do the Twins need to win in order to win the division? Three of four? Sweep?

I think the Twins have to sweep to keep alive their chance of winning the division. Detroit Wins with any combination of their wins and Minnesota losses and if Detroit beats Minnesota that counts as 2.

Mathematically, the Twins stay alive even if they lose three to the Tigers (three games behind with three to play) but will be difficult if they don't take three of four. In that case (3 of 4) they go to the final series one behind.

It's 1-0 Tigers in the 3rd now. We'll have to wait and see after today's double-header.

Correction: Losing three out of four will eliminate the Twinkies.

If the twins can win 3 of 4 they will be tied with Detroit.

2-2 would probably be too much to overcome.

The real question is which team has the best chance to knock off New Yuck.

Since they won't let Greinke pitch three games in a row, you've got a pretty good shot at winning at least two of your last three games, Twins fans.

We did our part by smacking down Detroit for 5 out of 6 in September.

You're welcome.

Twins stay alive on Friday - the standings now 1 game down with two to play.

This race is exciting with all the outcomes still possible:

- Tigers clinch today with a Twins loss and Tigers win (and similarly tomorrow)
- Twins clinch with 2 wins and 2 Tigers losses
- Season ends in tie (and one-game playoff) with either twins winning 2 and tigers 1-1, or twins 1-1 and tigers 0-2 in last two games.

Yet like TG said, the Twins face probable Cy Young winner Greinke today.

Both games start around 4PM.

Woot!

Season ends in a tie. A one game championship playoff will be played at the Metrodome tuesday night.

Win or go home.

This is the second consecutive year that the Twins have had to play a tiebreaking 163rd game. Last year they lost to the White Sox 1-0 on a Jim Thome home run.
