Stupid question that was bouncing around in my head last night.

What's the difference in those two terms? Are they interchangeable? Am I uploading pictures from my camera to the computer or downloading them?

It depends on where YOU are in relation to where the file is going.

If the file is on your camera.....you are PUTTING it ON the computer, so you're uploading it.
you then PUT it ON a server to host it so that you can link it so we can see it.

If the file is on your computer, and you want to have it on a disk, You're GETTING it FROM the computer, so you're DOWNloading it.
LIkewise, if it's on a server somewhere...and you want it on your computer, you're GETTING it FROM the server, so you're DOWNloading it to the computer.

That's why....way back before File Transfer was easy and used graphic interfaces....
in order to transfer a file TO a server, you'd PUT it....
and to get it FROM a server, you'd GET it.

Stitcher--you are making my head hurt.

What still confuses me is I transfer data from my garmin to my computer. Then I transfer that data to the online site my coach uses. Guess it's just a crap load of data transfer up and down?!

...and I still prefer command-line tools for this kind of thing.

Though, when I am on my computer, grabbing files from my camera I think I am downloading them from my camera (I am working on my computer, and getting the pictures from the camera).

No matter though. Just say you're transferring the pictures. Problem solved!

I've got advil in my desk....want some?

Ok....you're uploading TO the computer from the camera.
BUT, from the computer's point of view, it's DOWNloading from the camera.
Then, you're UPloading TO the server.

You UPload when you say "to...." somewhere.
You DOWNload when you say "from..." somewhere

It's easier to understand from computer to server that's somewhere else, not in your house.

The camera to computer thing.....
I agree, just say transfer.

but, the original question,..
Are the terms upload and download interchangeable?
NO.

but, it all is a matter of perspective.

BTW, I used to have to teach people how to Get/Put files.
Then we got FETCH (great little MAC software for File transfer)...
Then we (ok, I) were (was) forced to switch to WS-FTP when I got a job where they didn't use MACS...
now, we're on a different software for file transfer.

I still find myself drawing little houses and computers on the whiteboard and little curvy arrows with "files" flying through the air to explain the process. It works, 99% of the time. I've got one this semester, though....oy!

Think of it in terms of size.

GPS->PC
Small->Big = Uploading

PC->www
small->big = uploading

sever->pc
big->small = downloading
