The Case of the Cursed Running Shoes?

Yesterday I ran again in the shoes I was wearing when I sprained my foot in March, and just like that the injury site got more painful again after feeling almost normal for the last several weeks. I am starting to wonder if the shoes contributed to the injury.

The sprain happened during a marathon race, and after I'd had to stop a couple times to loosen and re-tie the laces. The shoes (with about 50 miles on them at that point) had been problem-free during the taper, but on race day I could not get comfortable in them even before I hurt myself.

After that I had "bad feelings" about the shoes, but their predecessors are totally worn out so I've done 2 runs in them lately. During the first run I thought they felt strange in the inner arch area on both feet and noticed how extremely tightly they had been laced (maybe by me? maybe by the running store -- but it hadn't bothered me in March until race day). Yesterday I re-laced them and felt fine during the run of an easy 6 miles, but have been in more pain since.

The shoes are NB 767s, my third pair, and a model I've been very happy with before these.

Could it be something wrong with the shoes?

Please help me unravel this mystery, KR sleuths!

Ah! Sounds very suspicious. It might not be totally due to the shoes, but they could be a contributing factor, couldn't they?

hmmm.. i have a cursed race. My first marathon was the MCM. I got hurt about a month before and had to resort to swimming, thus the race was horrible and I hit the wall and all that. This was the year I was going to take revenge and BQ all at once just to show that race who is boss.

I now have a stress fracture....going to the doc today. MCM wins again! angry9.gif

OMG, the Atlanta marathon course is cursed for me! I've only DNF'ed a race twice in my life, both this course... the first one, got pulled from the course and taken to the hospital for dehydration at the atlanta half marathon (I'd finished the half in years prior to that) and then my first attempt at the marathon, fell behind time limit and DNF'ed at mile 21. I just haven't been back since then. Thinking about returning this year if I'm in town.

I wonder if either the store or New Balance would be willing to swap out the shoes? Guess there's one way to find out.

Not yet. I haven't had a chance to go to the running store (an hour away).

They felt fine today, but I'm going to be very cautious and watchful running in them.

Right. smile.gif

If nothing else I'll make a trip to one of the DC area's fine running stores next week, and hope everything holds together until then.
