Something new I found that works

A few weeks ago, while running on the trail, I ended up coming back with 4 ticks on my legs. Since around here deer ticks are common, and they carry lyme disease, ticks freak me out just a little bit. So when I came back from a run with 4 of them on my legs, I was more than just a little bit concerned.

At the advice of a fellow Kick Runner, someone who runs trails and tall grass quite a bit, I went over to REI to see what they might have to prevent ticks.

While I was there, I spoke with one of the sales reps who recommended something called 3M Ultrathon. I have worn it the last 4 times I've been on the trail, and have not had a tick since then. In fact, during one run, I came back with one on my sock. He wanted to crawl onto my skin but didn't like the smell of the DEET on my legs. smile.gif

It works great. The downside is it is quite expensive. A 2oz tube goes $10.50, and I get 3 runs out of a tube. But if you're like me, and hate ticks, give it a shot. It works for me.

Ticks freak me out. I don't really have to worry about them where I do most of my running, but thanks for the good info. I <heart> REI. Just wish their stuff was a bit more affordable...

I use any product with a lot of DEET and it seems to do the trick overall with the ticks. Sometimes i find a big one on my shirt, but as long as it is not a deer tick i am not too upset.

Hey EQ, I agree. The stuff works! I buy my Ultrathon at Zombie Runner.... It looks like the prices are a little better than $10.50

I only get freaked when they are bloated and white. I once picked 72 off my last Aussie. Frontline is a godsend

DEET is the best midge repellant I have used but there is no doubt it's nasty stuff.

I use the 50%, when I was in Scotland for a week recently I tried to use it sparingly, anything which can burn through gore-tex can't be good for you!

I've never used it for ticks but a word of warning. DO NOT get it anywhere your eyes, if you sweat and it runs in you will be screaming!

As I said, nice stuff biggrin.gif

Hi,

Totally worth the price. I had Lyme Disease (cured after 2 rounds of antibiotics after about six months) and anything you can to to prevent it is worth it.

ticks don't bite, they suck
I use Deep Woods Off - it seems to work well. The horseflies are still bothersome though.
