Heart Rate Question

I just purchase the Garmin Forerunner 405cx. It's the first time I've ever used a heart monitor. I've used it 3 times now and each time my heart rate spikes up into the 170s for the first mile or so and then settles down to into the 120s and 130s for the next few miles before starting to climb again.

Is it normal for my heart rate to go that high early in the run before settling down?

I'm not super religious with my HRM but this very conversation came up recently in the 30s thread... seems this pattern is nearly universal amongst the folks there that also pay attention to HR during runs.
all that matters is what makes you happy

mine routinely elevates rather quickly for the first half mile or so before settling by 15 or so beats down to a more expected rate for the pace I'm running.

This is a pretty average graph for me. Notice the early high heart rate which lasts til about 8 minutes into the run before dropping back to normal. I was running a fairly even pace on a relatively flat course for this entire workout. I have no idea why heart rate acts this way. I never feel like my heart rate is elevated. It is generally imperceptible to me. I only see it on the graph

H'mmmm
I was comparing the data from my Garmin 305 through the Garmin Training Center and Sporttracks.  Yes I download it to both.  Garmin said that I spent most of my run in heart rate zone 4, while Sporttracks said I was in zone 3.  I am leaning towards believeing the sport tracks.  I guess I gotta go do some more research on the web and figure out what the correct zones should be.
