It's expense but LA just raised their fee to $120. I'd say the Boston experience is worth a lot more than running L.A.

I continue to be shocked at how expensive they all are getting. I ran a half in the spring that was $70! I am delighted to say I have a half in a couple weeks that is only $15.

But with that said, for airfare and Boston hotels, $130 seems like a drop in the bucket.

I'm just rationalizing because I need a new BQ and am not sure if I'm up to it this fall.

Since I'm accompanying roots, I plan to do my best to muster up a sub 3:46 - since we're both traveling it's not much more $$ to both run! Cheaper than another spring marathon trip if I don't BQ.

I agree with Runninlaw, the low-frills low-cost races are becoming more and more appealing (and rare).

Wasn't it $110 last year? I guess it's in line with some of the other big city marathons but it's still a lot. I'll still do it.

The BAA has sent out an email today to past participants urging them to register (if they have a qualifying time) stating they are rapidly approaching field size limit. Already! It's not even November 1! I registered online the other day. Phew!

Pretty amazing last year they filled up in January; I know a few people who were surprised and didn't get in. I just made it; I'd had no idea it was even close.

This year I took no chances and registered early.

They handed out complimentary entries to various Massachusetts running clubs already. Why don't they wait to see if there are any spots left first, and not sell out so early instead?

Those are invitational entries, like the charity entries. The fee for an invitational entry last year was $200, so they're not complimentary entries. The running clubs in the area all help support the running of the marathon and the BAA obviously wants to keep the good will. For example, my running club provides volunteers for every clock on the course. But, my club has not even distributed those invitational entry forms yet (so they are not part of the total). I think a lot of people who were qualified but shut out last year registered early this year!

ETA: I do think it's nice that they give those who wouldn't qualify an opportunity to pay for their slot in the race - just like they do in NYC with the lottery.

Does anyone actually know the current registration count? The B.A.A. site (search entries function) isn't providing the counter, like in previous years.

Anyone know a reported number? How full are they really?

It figures that the BAA would be secretive about that.

These earlier close out dates will definitely affect the marketing strategy of some December to January marathons. They can't bill themselves as "last chance" races if Boston is already filled. Unless you want to use that BQ for the following year.

As for me, my last BQ's were in late 2007 so I need a new one. This has been an off year for me both mileage and performance wise. I'm running a marathon in Harrisburg PA on Nov 11 but seriously doubt I can run the 8:13's that I'll need. Oh well, I did miss 2005 and 2006 too. No biggie.

True about that marketing angle to Dec-Jan marathons. It was but only a year or two ago that you could enter as late as March. Heck, there's a February marathon near Columbus named "Last Chance for Boston" marathon. This will be year #2 that they don't figure in.

Good luck - go get your BQ. I think you will still be able to enter on 11/12.

I'm also keeping an eye on the registration issue.

After some waffling, I've decided I'm in for 2010; my 2008 BQ is still good (though I wouldn't mind improving it).

Now I just need to sign up. I'm hoping I can hold out until my Amex card hits its monthly closing date (pretty sure that's next week). But all this talk here about things filling up is making me nervous....

We're registered!

It would be astonishing if Boston filled up this early. But then again why would the BAA, which is assured of a full field and high demand for its race, send out a message like that as a "scare" tactic or marketing strategy?

i barely made it in last year (registration closed the day after i registered!!!) and am SO thankful i heeded SGH's PM to register!

i really hope that the BAA is just being cautious. i'm thinking that they got a lot of irate communications last jan after registration closed so this year they are covering their a$$e$ by sending out advanced notice. i have 3 friends who are looking to attempt to qualify in late nov/early dec so i'm crossing my fingers that registration stays open for a little longer!

for those signed up, looking forward to seeing you in beantown!!!!!!!!

It's closed earlier every year for the past several years. If this keeps up, I think the only reasonable thing to do is tighten the qualifying times. They're a lot more lenient than they used to be.

You should be fine, since they haven't announced they're closed yet.

I found out yesterday, the invitational entry fee is now $250!

muaahahahahahaaaaa.....

I did mine online after seeing this ... awaiting my official acceptance but the bank has already given them my fee, sooooooooooooo ....

well ... I have NOT rec'd my official acceptance e-mail or snailmail ... but I am on the site's Entry List

that, along with my missing funds makes me feel pretty sure I'll be training another friggin' long, cold Ohio winter for a chance at redemption in Beantown!
