  • Running history - When did you start running? List any breaks from running due to injury or other reasons and the dates and duration. List any injuries. When was your longest streak of consistent running?
I played football my whole life, and honestly never ran more than 40 yds. unless I had to. However, college football is WAY in the distance, and I hadn't really found anything else to replace it re: staying in shape. Lifting is still fun, but sporadic. Racquetball requires a playing partner, and scheduling can be a bitch.

TW was a runner in her past life, and really wanted to get back into it. She got a book about marathoning by Galloway, then she joined TNT. I too read the book, but still had little interest. I started heading out occasionally with her. She would join her running ptnr, and I would go off alone. God I was awful at it. Then, went to her marathon, and saw some of the folks who were finishing -- and some of them really, really didn't look like "a marathoner." Immediately I thought, "if THEY can do this, so can I."

Summer of 2004, I started running. I was SOFA KING bad at it... At first, it was 1 min. run, 1 min. walk... But soon, the running times started improving. The first time I ran a mile was a big deal. The first time I did 3, 5, and 8 -- all super memorable. It didn't take long to get hooked.

First break from running was 11/05 - 4/06. After my 1st marathon, I just got away from it, and got sucked into work hell. 2d break was 2/07 - 8/07. Not a complete layoff, but I hurt my Achilles, and it just took forever for me to seek help. A.R.T. set me free, baby.

Most recent break from running: 6/19/08 - present. Knee injury -- no one can diagnose WTF it is. I was going to be brief about this, but ... you can skip this part if you want.

{WARNING - LONG version of the knee injury coming}
After my May marathon, things were going BEAUTIFULLY. Running was better than ever, and I was really, really starting to improve my weight and overall conditioning. Out for an everyday 5 miler when knee pain just... started. Inside the knee joint, but on the lateral side. There was no popping, tearing, or jolt. Just started hurting. I was afraid of an LCL tear or something.
self-diagnosed with ITBS... Took months to figure out that was not the case. After 8 - 9 weeks of stretching, massage, and PT, there was no improvement. So, I finally started getting specific with my PT guy about the precise location of the pain. He thought it was a torn meniscus, and started treating for that. Meanwhile, I got an appt. with an ortho. surgeon.
After all this time, I was still completely unable to run. Felt like the pain was right on top of my tibia. ugh.
By the time I got in to see the ortho, the knee was feeling a bit better. The X-ray, MRI, and MRI arthrogram were inconclusive. Got a 2d opinion recently, and everyone's best guess is - torn meniscus that finally began healing before the images were taken.
{end of knee injury story}

It is starting to feel better. Started getting some slow, short runs in - and just dealing with whatever discomfort happens. At this point, I'm going to run until the knee learns how to deal with whatever is going on, or until I simply blow the fucker up. THEN maybe someone can fix it!

Longest streak was . . . 15 months. 8/04 to 11/05. Hoping that - as my knee resolves - I will run now until I die.
  • Current miles per week (MPW)
About 10. See above for reason!! Before the knee, I was doing about 30.
  • Highest ever MPW and when
42 - March 08 - ramping up to Vancouver marathon
  • Training pace(s)
I go by feel. Also, I don't really do any structured speedwork. Normal running pace (pre-injury) - about 9:30.
  • Race PRs and paces - Give any needed information such as how relevant this PR is now or any factors that may have effected your performance.
5K 26:26 (8:30 pace) Set June 21, 2008. Marathon -4:54 (11:15 pace). Set May 4, 2008.
  • One year from now, I hope to...
Be at my target weight, and I hope to have completed 2 more marathons. If I do both of those, I will also have a new PR
  • I plan to achieve the above by... (As specific as general as necessary)
a. get my knee FIXED.

b. Steady exercise plan and continue being responsible re: diet, sleep, and avoid working more than 80 - 85 hrs a week.
  • I specifically want input on...
If anyone has any great input on how to rehab a knee after a (presumed) torn meniscus, I am all ears!!
  • List your last 2 weeks of workouts and expound on any that seemed significant to you for whatever reason.
10/27 - 10/31: 3, R, 2, 4(walking), 2, 4, R - all runs on TM.
11/2 - 11/7: 4, 2, R, 3, R, 4 (planned tonite)
* run of 10/27 was significant. Best outdoor run in 4 months. Slow, but super encouraging to be out there.

* this week's runs have gone well. Knee holding up pretty well. After Wednesday's 3 miler, the leg was pretty sore on Thursday, but better again today. I was a little worried on Th., but encouraged now.
  • List your next 2 weeks of workouts and explain what you hope to achieve with this training schedule (like a future race or something).
11/10 - 11/16 - 3, 2, R, 3, R, 5, R
11/17 - 11/23 - 3, 2, 2, 3, R, 5, R.
Through some slow, easy miles and low mileage, I am hoping to rehab the knee, and work back up to my daily 4 miler. I will increase I think I will stay with the 11/17 sched. for at least 2 - 3 weeks before ramping up further.
Initially, I'll get back to 3, 3, 3, 3, R, 5, R. I'll hold that for a few weeks, then start bumping up a mile on one of the dailies, and then on the weekend run.
I hope to be back to roughly 25 miles a week by Feb. Hopeful for another May marathon, but really shooting for excellent conditioning for Dublin in October.

Here we go, life's waiting to begin.

GoV - great to see you around. Strange situation with the mysterious knee issue. Even with the MRI's, still no diagnosis???

The only thing I know about meniscus recovery is very unscientific. I take a dose of glucosamine condroitin - inconsistently, but I take it (along with my multi, fish oil, magnesium and calcium supplement - also all very inconsistently).
I'd recommend knee stability (strengthening) exercises. Not your run of the mill leg extensions (I haven't done those in probably 10 years), but more hammy curls (on the exercise ball), twisting lunges, straight leg lifts (w/ankle weights), lower weight leg press - anything to help stabilize the knee will probably do you well I think. But I'll defer to the actual PT-type folks around here.

I have a slight meniscus tear on my inner right knee - from a hammy strain a few years ago believe it or not and the discomfort comes and goes. Just something I have to live with I suppose. It's not bad enough for invasive measures...yet.

Long work weeks like that are the work of the devil!

Hope your recovery and come back go well. I look forward to hearing about your progress!

Thanks. I have done more biking and stretching lately, but hadn't really considered these types of strengthening work. Also, I have the glucosamine/condroitin, but I'm REALLY not in the habit of taking it. I know a few people who swear by it.

Here we go, life's waiting to begin.

I can't help with knee issues. All I can suggest is rest and whatever the doctor says. Not very helpful, huh?

Hey Gov,

Thanks for posting your ROTD. Sorry to hear things have been so aggravating with your knee. I hope that you are able to find what the issue is or it clears up more. It's hard enough having an injury much less grasping at straws so you can figure out what the problem is and get it correct. I feel for ya there.

I wish I had some advice to give here, but I'm at a loss.

The thing I liked most about reading your ROTD is the determination and unwillingness to give up. I admire that you are pushing through. Struggles make us stronger. I know the longer I am out the more detailed the return to greatness plan gets! I love to see someone else like you fighting for their running.

I wish I were going to see you guys in January but there will be another TNT event in my future. Surely June... whether it will be an HM or an M is yet to be determined. I hope we get a chance to connect at a race in the future.

Best of luck with your knee and running.
