Le Grizz 50 Mile...fun Playing On The Road

Well this will be my 3rd attempt at a race report...the first 2 were amazing and i wished I could have saved em but alas I'm doing this at work and have issues with machines...hrmph

Anyways...it was a beautiful day as Dangerousdan itterated....fun was had by all...we got to run with DD on and off for the first 3 hours...then she left us in the dust...nvever did see her again...not even at the finish line...'course we took off as soon as I got a massage...

Right out of the gate I knew I had problems when I got this searing, hot ,pain in my right thigh...DD was quick to point out that I had pinned my race # to my leg.........again........wow I thought I'd learned that lesson...so...offf we went chatting and having fun...until mile 18 when we stoppped at the 1st AS and we had to get some stuff...DD just blasted on through...Larry(skirun) headed out quickly and I had an arguement with a pkg of desert tofu...it won...I ended up with tofu in my beard and a tummy full of unsure... and a few chips and a vew pair of gloves...I was freezing and it took a while to catch Larry but when I did I noticed he was doing the powerwalk grimace...and told me that the cramping that started a few miles back had gone from his calf up his leg into his hips and back and shoulder...i think his left ear lobe was even cramping...oh boy...so we slowed down from the 10 m/m we had been keeping to a 12 ..which was fine with me ..as I could save my energy for later when he got his power back...as he always does...we don't call him Larry the Rok for nothin....

Larrys wife Mary was crewing for us as were many others for theirs...seeing as the race is all on a road with total access for crews at anytime ..so long as you don't pas anything to your runner from a moving vehicle...it was sort of like Badwater minus about 100 degrees...sorta...anyways he got some vitamin I from her a few miles later and by the time he came around we were at mile30 and that's when it started to be fun again...

Joined up with a fella from Helena who had done it twice before and we told him never again....he said Awww by monday you'lll say it was a great race...well it was ..just not our kind of terrain...gravel packed like concrete and pavement...hmmmmm...noppe still won't do it again...

With ten( sorry about the preposition there)miles to go Mary said "hey you guys look great" I just looked at her and said...Larry smells the barn...whe laughed knowing what I was in for...so now it was my turn to suffer...my knees had started to hurt at 20 and now every downhill...and there were lots...not steep but relative to the ups...enough difference to cause my knees to howl...and then on some of the tight corners..the cambre of the road was steep and that made the kneees squeel with delight....so by the time we hit the Hungry Horse Dam(N) at 47 I had to stop every half mile to manipulate kneecaps to lessen the discomfort...it helped and we continued to reel in other tired wornout runners who were now runnin on adrenaline and the smell of the barn...

Finally we are directed off the road at through a grove of small tress up a hill for about 100 feet and onto the short cut road to the finish...all legal and marked and everything...then the finall 100 yards DOWNHILLL to the finish line....ahhhhhhhhhh...theres the trophy table...and the m****age tent...let's get some food and go home...saw a few folks we met at the start line...everybody was happy even the guy who ran the whole race in thick wool socks and crocks tied on with binder twine...sorta like a yuppy Taramahara(SP)...

thanks again to all the Volunteers...I've been there and done that and know how long a day it can be...

thanks also to the makers of Burpetuum...even though it gassed me up a bit on the top end it did the trick and at no time did I loose my energy... a 1st for me in anything over 5 hours...

we finish at about 9:50 which was better than we expected based on our lack of training for this type of event...and I'll have to admit I would probably do it again...now that it's monday...my muscles are still a bit sore but my kneecaps fell like someone took a ballpeen hammer to them...that will pass...gonna take a rest for a few weeks before going out for anything like a serious run...then start planning next year...
