i read the crystal cave when i was in high school. today i watched about 5 minutes of Merlin on the sci fi channel. from what i saw, it could be a good book. i checked out the merlin titles on barnes & noble. there are several to choose from.

which one is best?

the once and future king

..oh. you're asking which is the best from that series. i wouldn't know. i've only read the first one.

i initially read your question as "which is the best merlin book [ever]?"

That's what I was thinking, The once and future king.

There's a new(ish) series that I read to my kids. Wasn't so sure about whether I liked them as an adult, but the boys liked them. They're by T.A. Barron and the series is entitled "The Lost Years of Merlin".

Is this something else I need to add to my to-read list?

Well, it's light reading, Barron takes the story of Merlin from childhood and ventures to a mystical island that is set somewhere off the coast of England. It was a good series of books to read to 10 year olds... and there was some interest in it for me, but I'm not sure it would appeal to all adults.

I bought 5-6 of them for my son, but he's reading adult type nonfiction books (the kind I couldn't handle), maybe I should take these off his hands as I've been reading what the 7th grader reads these days

Loved the Crystal Cave. I think I need to reread that as well. I seem to recall really liking The Mists of Avalon too.
