I'm in the buying mood. I will be 180-210# range.

What brands do you trust ?

Where can I find them for the best price.

I've been keeping this in mind as well. I did some digging and found these are pretty popular model and company and this is the cheapest site I could find.

Look at www.northernlites.com. They are by far the lightest and they're designed for racing. I got a pair last year. I use them for running on packed XC trails and for just hiking with the dogs. I love them.

Those look amazing Roadie Gal, but I don't think I can afford that extra $50, plus those Atlas ones have free shipping.

If you're feeling a little tight on purchasing I recommend mine, but if you have more spending money than a teenager I'd prolly go with Roadie's.

I'm old and I'm old school.
I use ashe frames. Big, Heavy Bearpaws.
I hit the drifts & the deep "back-country" snow....stay off the trails...
Go for the bushwhackers.

Those are great for walking, but not so hot for running.

I still have a pair of HUGE Tubbs that I used to use when I did mountaineering and had to carry a 60+ pound pack. You don't sink, but boy, do your legs get tired.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can rent a pair of running showshoes? I want to make sure I like it before I shell out close to $200 for a pair....

Some events will rent out snowshoes. Find a race in your area and contact the RD to find out. Sometimes an RD will even have a spare pair (since he/she won't be racing) to lend you.

Some of our local cross country areas will rent snowshoes. Also some places that carry skis and snowshoes will rent.

Hi Flounder! I just bought some Atlas 8x25's, I weight 159 pounds. They have stainless steel crampons, rails and heal cleats. These are a little heavier than the racing type but probably best for mountineering. I can run in them with no problem. I also got some adjustable poles, a must buy after today's test. They have a life time warranty and I got a good deal on them, less than half price as they were last years being sold out at Bob Wards. As for climbing and steep falls they are fantastic. Because of the small footprint they tend to sink alot in soft snow if you hesitate. Over all I am very pleased with them and am chomping at the bit to get back on them. Good luck, Larry
