winter hats for women

I'd like to know from the ladies what kind of hat you wear for winter temperatures, especially if you have long hair. This will be my first winter running outside. So far I have been wearing a Nike dri-fit visor and it does very well to keep sweat out of my eyes and I can keep it in place. I seem to have a large head for a woman--size 8 plus I have long thick hair--I can never get a regular ball cap-style hat to fit right on my head.

So now it's 37 degrees this morning and mornings will continue to get cooler from here in. Any ideas? I think I saw a beanie (UA probably) that has a slot in the back to pull a pony tail through, so that might be an option. Would one of those wide headbands or buffs that covers the ears work well enough or would there still be too much heat loss? I think I'm most worried about the fact that I'm just not used to wearing a proper hat, even for casual outdoor activity (I'd usually have a hooded coat), so I don't know how hot I'll get and it's not exactly something you can send back after running and sweating in it.

Thanks,
Lisa

I have a headband that is thin enough that I can wear it by itself or put it under other stuff. As far as I can tell, it's fairly unisex.

In my experience, when running a little insulation goes a long way because you're putting out a lot of heat.

2008 race schedule:
June 7, Green River marathon, WA
July 4, Foot Traffic Flat Marathon, OR
July 26, White River 50M
Aug 16, Where's Waldo 100K

i wear the headband things.

but i also wear a neck gaiter when very cold and windy. Because i find my winter running fashion hysterical. i take pictures. Before the neck gaiter i wore a ninja mask well, a balaclava face mask that made me look like a ninja

and

I should be a model!

I use a fleece headband most of the time (bought cheap at Wal-mart or where ever), a fleece hat if its even colder, and a mysterious ninja mask if the wind is killing me.

I use a headband to keep my ears warm. The cold doesn't bother my head so much, perhaps because of all the hair...

I wear a fleece headband as well but I also found a really nice lightweight running hat by Sporthill at my local LL Bean outlet last year. I wear it all the time in the winter and it keeps me plenty warm.

2+ on the Sporthill hat. I have short hair, so I wear a hat a lot. I like it best if I can pull it down to cover my ears. If I'm not wearing the Sporthill hat, then I wear a fleece or any nylon watch cap that I can throw in the wash.

I've always done a headband--but my hair was always long

I think I'll try a beannie hat with my short hair this year. I wore a blaze orange hat this weekend.......no one shot at me!!

Right now I'm wearing my Nike running hat and an ear band on my ears, I put the ear band over top of my hat. Its been anywhere from 26 to 35 in the mornings when I run. When its in the low 20s and below, I use my ear band and a beanie over top. I'm quite the fashion statement, but its dark and no one sees me anyway. Besides, I'm all about being comfortable.

fox-runr, my beanie isn't orange, but I don't run where people hunt!

I have a Nike dri-fit running hat that has the hole in the back for a pony, although I never put my hair in a pony. It's my ears I'm most concerned with and this hat covers my ears. I've also worn a fleece head band to cover my ears and that works well too.
