Do any of you run in them? I've always thought they were cute, although some of the hard core women runners I know think they are silly. (Including one of the owners of our local running store, who just started carrying Triks.)

Well I bought one! There's a Lululemon store here in Whistler, which I LOVE. They had the cutest little aqua skirt with lemon yellow shorts underneath, and I just couldn't resist. Can't wait to get home and try it out!

I have to wear longer shorts so I don't start a thigh fire.

Those skirts look way too short for me.

I tried getting some because I heard the tight shorts underneath really help chafing...
Nooo way. Rode up and chafed worse than regular shorts. $60 wasted. :(

One of our regional elite ultrarunners (a guy) wears running skirts to the ultra he runs. Lately, a number of the other ultra guys have been wearing them too.

Sean Meissner, the instigator and all-around good guy, is the one with the orange Montrail vest (he's sponsored.)

Edit: But much as I enjoy talking to Sean at races, I'd much rather see Dev in that skirt. Yum.

Dude! Ask DETurtle, she wore them quite successfully and then you won't have wasted $60. I don't think the compression shorts are too expensive if you get them from Target or somewhere (I don't know where people have bought them cheaply, but I know they have).

Ah, yesterday I bought a Moving Comfort Skort. We'll see how it feels this afternoon. I might have purchased the wrong size, a medium, but the large looked really large and they don't come with a drawstring. I didn't feel like taking time to try it on in the store. Tried it on at home, and there a bit of a wrinkle at the top near the waistband, but I don't think that'll be any problem. I'm more concerned with how the shorts underneath feel. I hope for no chafing.

I'm of two minds on this. They're really cute, but I'm not sure I could handle all the flapping. Is it a problem for anyone?

Gingerbread
05-03-2007, 01:37 PM
I'll report back on that tomorrow (I hope I remember). It doesn't seem loose enough to flap though. I'm not sure.

The one I have is a wrap-around looking one with enough fabric that one doesn't flash people if the flap flips (hah!), so I suppose in this case it would depend on how windy it is, or how fast one goes :)

Gingerbread
05-04-2007, 09:28 PM
OK, reporting back. They're not bad, although it was breezy and the flap did flip but only giving any viewers a bit more look at my right leg, nothing too risqué.

The compression shorts underneath did creep up, but not the way regular shorts do, plus they're not as long as regular shorts so there isn't as much fabric to get in the way. I still had a bit of chafing, but I think I'd have that regardless with razor stubble. I think some waxing should occur in the area for a more chafe free running experience.

I have several skirts. My favorite is Sugoi (the compression shorts are perfect. This was pricey but worth it, It also comes in cute blue/white too):

Adidias supernova is also very good:
http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2417207
The skirtsport gymgirl is ok. I have 2 of these. The cameo one has tighter compression shorts which stay put better. The regular gym girl rides up a little so I wear it for xtraining only.
http://www.skirtsports.com/products/GymGirl-Pink-Camo.cfm
Athleta's Beach run skorts are cute but the shorts are horrible so I don't wear it for any type of workout but it is a cute skort for fun.
HTH someone. I really like wearing these. The flapping factor doesn't bother me it really is minimal. However if you are buying a tennis skirt or one of the generic Target ones not made specifically for running there is much more material and the flapping could be a factor. Good luck.

Thanks - interesting experiences everyone is having with them. I think I'll stick with shorts for the time being (my budget for the year doesn't have much wiggle room), but maybe give it a think again once the end of summer sales start.

I suppose they can look silly, but really if I cared about looks when I run, I wouldn't wear the damn shorts. The way they ride up between my legs has to look terrible. The skirt was more comfortable to run in than shorts. Tights are the most comfortable of the 3 options.

I have a new balance running skirt and I just bought a champion one from Target (It was pretty cheap). I usually put the skirt on, fix the little shorts underneath and then put a pair of compression shorts over the little ones with the skirt. I have a couple of them that I do this with.

I run in compression type shorts, QN. I have chubby thighs, and if I don't wear those, my legs chafe. And the shorts ride up. Or I run in capris that fit that same way (tight, but not gross tight). Actually I run in capris a lot.

I am considering buying a wrap to go over my tri shorts for the run this year.

Just a guy's perspective on how they look --

I see people wearing them at races all the time. I actually think they look pretty good on runners.

Some women wear them to the gym. Invariably they are the serious fitness-bunnies who work really hard on getting big glutes and low bodyfat. On them I think the skirts look incredibly skanky. Kind of pornstar-wannabee.

No reflection on Heather, who last time I checked does not fit that profile at all.

They're from www.skirtsports.com (http://www.skirtsports.com) of which I was not enamoured just viewing on the website, but I saw someone last week wearing them and it looked comfortable, and the shorts underneath have a longer inseam than the moving comfort one I have now.

I checked the ones at the local store. They had the Marathon Girl and the Gym Girl. I was surprised that the Marathon Girl was very sheer in a way. Sure the air would pass through, but you could actually see through it. It doesn't have compression shorts, more like boy shorts. They do have pockets, but not as many as race ready shorts. The Gym Girl ones have pockets on the legs of the compression shorts, so under the skirt.

I'm going to check and see if the other local store, and local means within 50 miles of a zip code in this case, has a different variety. This brand looked good on the person I saw wearing them, but has a whole lot less hip than I, and I'm not terribly hippy. They didn't sit as well on my waist, there was bunching up at the back near the waistband.

Frankly, there is no way in hell I'm going to wear a skirt...err...skort for running. But it's a personal preference. I often get out the door wearing an orange/white hat, blue shirt, melon colored running shorts, black socks (if I'm running the trails), and my filthy and oh-so-lovable and cherished trail shoes. I prefer to look like a hobo than some primped fitness bunny, thankyouverymuch.

Heh. For me, it's not about how it looks, it's just more comfortable. Your outfit described above sounds good. I only have one skort and several pairs of shorts. All the shorts are more annoying than I like during a run, and the body glide works for the chafing, but I'd rather not have to worry about it. So, I'll keep looking for more skorts that don't cost a bundle. I am never mistaken for a fitness bunny as far as I know. :)

I have one made by Hind; it's slightly longer and has compression shorts underneath. The shorts ride up slightly, but not enough to be a problem. It's very comfortable, but the longest run I have done in it was six miles.

The skorts seem to be very popular in our area (midwest). I have to say that I think it makes my chubby legs look a little leaner. :-)

how little are the shorts that come with it? I don't like compression shorts under a skirt (I have enough trouble with cycling shorts and my huge thighs), I'm looking more for a bikini bottom type short underneath. (hey...I'm from split shorts era and don't much give a rip..if my crotch is covered I'm good). So the shorter the pantie underneath the better, or they have to be touching my knees. I have big thights with no hips.

For those who have the C9 skorts... I normally put on a pair of compression shorts first, then the skort over it, since I have a little problem with the little shorts riding up. I've been wearing Runningskirts.com skirts for a couple of years now and I rarely run in shorts anymore. They are very comfy, cool and have the pockets that I want. I also have one skirt from Triks that I got cheap at Sierra Trading Post and I don't really care for it. It's shiny and the design doesn't work well for me. The only skirt I run in with compression shorts underneath is a Sugoi skirt. It's very nice and well made but the fabric is thick and the shorts ride up on me.

I resisted buying a running skirt for quite some time because I, too, thought they would seem a little too "fitness-bunny" like for my taste, but the more I started seeing serious women runners wearing them and not looking like a fitness bunny in them, I decided to give it a try. I bought a black Gym Girl Triks one (the one with the compression shorts) and it is so comfortable. I really like my Nike Tempo shorts too , but this skirt ranks right up there with it. I actually feel like I get a little more coverage with the skirt then I do with shorts and with the skirt, I never worry about anything riding up. The compression shorts do ease up a bit on my thigh but once my skin warms up, I just put them back in place and they stay there for the rest of my run. And as far as flapping in the back, I asked a friend to watch me run and tell me if it was flapping up and he assured me it wasn't. Of course, since "he" is a guy, so there's no telling if he was being honest with me or not . . . :???:

I have a running dress, 3 triks skirts, and one lost in the mail from RS.com

I LOVE MY SKIRTS! I have fat thighs. It's not fun picking shortie wedgies out. The skirt plus some body glide makes me a happy girl. I think it's fashion forward. No need to look crummy while exericising. I can look crummy any other time.

OK, I need your folks advice.

I need to find a running skirt that will make me look suitably trampy but doesn't cost that much. I've agreed to wear it at my first 100 miler, which is really a Jaloween party disguised as an ultra race. Dan Harshburger, another one of the Oregon Ultra crowd is wearing one and I've agreed to join his "theme."

So I figure it should be pretty skanky looking - have to show off my hippo cottage cheese thighs ;) Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look?

And what to wear under it? A thong?

I tried on two different triks skirts, but I didn't like the way they fit (I was able to find a store near here that carries them). I think I have too much belly fat for them to fit me well.

So I ordered two from runningskirts. I got one with just the liner (or panties) and one with the shorts. The one with the shorts, I don't remember what they're called, seems to run large. I ordered them both the same size, but the one with shorts almost fell off (or felt like it) when I ran in it the first time. Once I started sweating, it seemed to stay put, but the first mile or so I was tugging on the back because it seemed to be slipping down. I think I'm going to add a safety pin to it. It was quite comfortable other than that. The material is very lightweight and soft. Might be a bit too lightweight, in that I don't know how robust it is. It might not hold up to hard use.

The other one, with just the liner, fits very well, and other than a bit of chafing on longer runs (10 miles) I really like it for running. I expect with a bit more Bodyglide I'll sort out that chafing.

Cool. I'm actually considering writing to them to ask about the sizing and if perhaps it's a normal variation due to the difference in design between the two skirts or if it was an unusual occurance. I can't send it back, I've already run in it (and made it stinky thereby) so I'm going with the safety-pin option.

I actually wear a pair of compression shorts underneath the little shorts in the skirts for my most of my long runs, helps to cut down on bodyglide use. Sometimes I run with just the little shorts, but like to have the extra layer!

Ooo! I hadn't seen those before. This is from the website regarding length. I found it in the "sizing chart" area:

Short and Skirt
Begins from bottom of waistband. This length will vary slightly with the fit of the garment, but the skirt will fall approximately 1/2 inch below the short.

And this picture gives a reasonable idea of the length, I think:

they sent me an email that it was about 12 inches. they said since the length varies by size, it was confusing people when the info was there. the other skirt is 1 inch longer.

the colors on the actual website are nicer than the one selection at zombie though. but zombie has the discount.

Has anyone tried the cute little skirts at www.runningskirts.com? They're gorgeous, I've offered myself one as a treat when I get to 10km, hadn't heard of all the alternatives mentioned in this thread.
