Essential Winter running gear

Post what is essentail for you in winter for weather below 0F. It would be most helpful to also include a link to somewhere we can actually see the product.

I want to get ready and stay off the TM this winter.

I am usually OK for the 1st hour at any temp, but after that I struggle.

I'm in a buying mood - I would appreciate any help

Neck gaiter is the most awesome accessory. I wore one last year, often coupled with a hat. When it got really cold, the gaiter came up over the head as well.

1 pair of gloves and a pair of mittens for really cold days.
1 pair of tights, pair of pants over top when needed.

Hmmm. Been wondering about this myself. I want to pick up some running pants, but I am short (5'-6") and everything I see is too long. If someone knows of a certain make\model that runs a little short, I would be a happy short runner.

Not sure about sub 0 degrees F.

10F is my personal comfort threshold. Below 10F, I'm considering running inside. If outdoors in that weather, its two of everything. Tights, with a part of pants on top.

Otherwise, I have no problems with 15+ temps. Tights, base layer, jacket, gloves, and hat.

When its really, really cold, a pair of clear lens glasses helps avoid frozen tears in the eyes!

Last year when it went below 0 I wore the following:

neck gaitor (which I pull down off of my mouth/nose once i warm up)
wicking ski hat thingy
thin wicking long sleeve
thicker wicking moc turtleneck long sleeve
thick fleece jacket
running tights
and if it was windy - these wind resistent running pant things
I wear gloves initially but always take them off in a bit.

Put vaseline or Eucerin Aquafor ointment on your face to avoid wind burn.

One thing I worked out last year that I really liked - I hate cold hands (which I get pretty easily) and I hate sweaty hands (ditto). So last year I went with the layered approach - one pair thin cotton gloves, or if colder, one pair knit mittens, topped with a pair of Outdoor Research waterproof mittens. The don't seem to sell the exact model anymore - but it did not come up over my forearm - just regular mitten length.

Kept my hands comfortable and I could adjust layers as the conditions changed.

For tights I recommend the Sporthill brand XC pant made with their 3SP material. It's windproof as well as very warm. I wear them all winter long for running, skiing, snowshoeing, etc. I think they do make a petit in small and medium sizes. www.milemarkersports.com

I cleaned out all the closets and took a full inventory of winter running gear tonight - I have a ton of workable solutions by layering all effected areas.

Roadie Gal - Nice link - I am a little short on higher tech stuff - So if I hit one of my goals by early December, I think i will treat myself to a top and bottom.

BTW - I've had some of my most enjoyable runs on days -10F or colder when there is no wind and a fresh blanket of light fluffy snow -

I love my tights and long sleeve compression stuff. If it's under 0, I'll have those under some normals running pants, and on top have a running jacket or something. If it's really cold or I don't feel like layering I got these amazing thick Sporthill pants/tights...Might be what Roadie linked you too. Also got a really nice Patagonia running/racing jacket. It's not much but it's really dense material that keeps me very toasty. I also have the Under Armour Hood/mask which I use whenever there's wind. I'm looking at some of Nike and Under Armour's winter gloves right now instead of the cheap-o black ones or normal gloves. They are made from material familiar to my arctic tights.

As to where to find all of this...my personal addiction.







eBay!!! Within the last month I've bumped up my dad's rating by like 15 I think. Tehe...better start paying that debt off now. :D

I am shorter than you (5'4") and I wear running pants often. My favorite pair is from title 9.

I'll have to look for a neck thing. My neck freezes when it's cold. It gets sweaty, and then cold. Brr...

I run in tights with pants over them when it's cold. I just picked up a pair of addidas pants that were thicker, and I'm going to wear them over my tights. I got mine at Marshalls ($20).

shoe gaiters? never seen them anywhere but online. Neck gaiters you can get at any sporting good store.

I've run in temperatures down to -39C for periods of up to 4 hours. I generate a lot of body heat due to my size, so I have to be careful when I run to not overdress. I dress according to temperature with layers. For temps down to about 10F below freezing I normally pull on a pair of thinsulate long underwear with high top XC ski socks. I will bring a thin pair of cloth gloves (garden variety) and wear a toque if it's windy, otherwise not. For colder weather I'll put on a pair of warm up pants, and for very cold weather I'll add a second pair. On really cold runs I'll use mitts, and carry gloves for when the hands warm up a bit, but often I go barehanded after the first 15 min or so. I also will carry a spare toque for runs over an hour, as they get wet with sweat and will freeze to my head, exposing my ears to frostbite. Over top of my wicking shirts I will add a sweat shirt, and for really cold weather I'll add two. I'll also sometimes put a towel around my neck to keep sweat from flowing down my back. Nothing special on my feet other than XC ski socks. That's it!
